Krabask is a 23 year old Arabian gelding that was surrendered to us. He was abandoned by his owner who up and moved to CA, leaving him behind at a private boarding farm. She sent money once for him but then told the owner of the property she couldn't afford him and just to keep him. They have had him since April, and decided they couldn't afford to keep him over the winter and were going to take him to auction. A concerned neighbor stepped in and asked if she could try to find him a place to go instead, and contacted us. Krabask was delivered to SAFE today. I can't really find fault with the people who had him - he was never their responsibility. Prior to them this poor boy seemed to have had a long history of being dumped every few years. He is very thin, and supposedly has been thinner and has gained weight. He has not had his teeth done, so that's the first place to start with him. He was being blanketed and fed senior, beet pulp, rice bran and oil and has gained weight, but he is still very, very thin. (A side note: the lady that had him had a vet look at him and he told her not to try too hard to get weight on him, old horses just get that way...grr!). That said, he's perky, sound, and has a very cute trot. Supposedly, he is very well trained (dressage trained) and very safe for children to ride. He seems very well mannered and easy to handle. Dr. Hannah is going to come check him out on Tuesday, for now he's blanketed up well and had warm mush for dinner along with a huge pile of hay, which he seemed very content to eat. Here's a quick picture I took tonight. He arrived as it was getting dark so better pictures will follow. I've decided he looks exactly what I would imagine a cross between Dobbin and Shante would look:

I think I know who this horse is. It's not like that name is very common! I can't look him up as I no longer have Arabian horse datasource (got tired of paying $75 each year), but I believe he was owned by Diana Richards in Bothell at one point. If it's him- they showed him in dressage and used him for lessons for many years. I remember he had the most amazing trot.
Thanks SAFE for taking him.

I was wondering if we would be able to track down any of his previous owners. Any idea how to contact Diana? PM me if you do. Thanks!

Diana had to sadly sell most of her horses because she lost her place and she had some health issues this year so I'm not sure she would be able to take him. I contacted a friend who has datasource and see if he is the same horse. I'll post what I find out!

Jaime, thank you SO much for contacting me. I just want to set the record straight about this boy... he was MUCH loved, and was certainly not bounced from owner to owner every few years. I finally retired him in 2004, when he developed arthritis in his hind fetlocks and I didn't think was fair to keep him trying to work towards collection. But he needed a job. He's the kind of horse who feels very neglected unless he's fussed over and loved on, so I gave him to a lady who really adored him and was taking riding lessons from a friend of mine. He was supposed to be a trail horse (and he loved going out on the trail). I have 2 different stories of what happened next, but I just can't believe that anyone would neglect a horse so sweet and good natured. Some people are just unbelievable. He is the sweetest horse alive, and I can't imagine how anyone could neglect a horse like this. He certainly didn't deserve this. I cannot tell you how glad I am to know that he didn't get trundled off to auction by the very bizarre woman who gave him up (NOT his owner, by the way). I feel complete responsibility for him, and if need be, I will take him back and care for him until he dies. In fact, I think I would rather, just because he is such a doll. I can't fathom allowing even the possibility that he might go through this again. ~Tammy

Lots of drama today regarding this horse! First, thank you so much to mytwoponies for recognizing this horse and posting the info that brought me to his previous owners!! It seems that what I was told was not entirely correct. In fact, the lady who brought him to me went so far as to have a friend call and pretend to be the previous owner so I had proof that he was legally her horse. I spoke to the real previous owner (after Tammy had him) and she was in tears over this. Now that we know the lady we got him from lied about this, I am pretty sure she also lied about how much she was supposedly feeding him. But on the bright side, that means he just hasn't been fed and that's easy to fix! We are still working out the details, but as of right now, this horse has two previous owners that are willing to take care of him, and two potential retirement homes as well (and you know how hard those are to find!). As I told Bonnie today, the gods were smiling on this horse, because there were a lot of unlikely events that brought this horse to safety. Here are some photos of Krabask I took today. I will let Dr. Hannah give him an official BCS, but to my eye he is about a 2. Not good at all. Krabask in happier days:

Horsepeople = drama.
Glad he's got multiple options for a good place to go, and glad he is being fed properly!

Krabask may be thin, but it looks like he still has plenty of spark in his eyes. And he is only 23, which is not that old for an Arab. So unless he has other issues besides his weight, I am sure he will be looking good in no time.
It is great he has a couple of people coming forward to take him back into their lives. It is too bad the woman who had him felt the need to lie to you so SAFE would take him. But it is sure a good thing for Krabask that she did.

This boy has a lucky star out there for sure. How heartbreaking it must be for his previous owners to see him like this.
