Wow- what a wonderful outcome for him. How lucky he is to find all of you! I guess being an Arabian horse nerd paid off He looks terrible- he was always an easy keeper when I knew him. In fact, he was always on the chubby side! I was at Diana's around 1997 to 1998. I remember seeing him being ridden and thinking "oh my gosh, who is THAT?" He was not an easily forgettable horse. His sire always produced quite remarkable horses. He is also a grandson of the famous *Bask. He was very loved and very well cared for at Diana's. He taught many horse-crazed teenagers to ride over the years.

I know how well those old Bask buggers can bounce back--even the harder keeping ones.
I'm sure he'll be looking fabulous again in a few weeks, especially with SAFE's exceptional care. ;D

UN-believable. I lose a little faith in humanity with every horse SAFE takes in; but gain it back double when things like this happen. Krabask is a beauty and those A-rabs are not nearly as fragile as they appear!!
So does our boy have a home???

Wow, if he does have a home already, that's got to be a new rehoming record for SAFE!

No no, nothing firm yet, in fact he's not even available for adoption yet. He needs vet work, farrier work, and some weight on him before I would even want to move him. But, we do have several options for him, and options are good to have, especially when dealing with a skinny old retiree.

Dr. Hannah saw Krabask last evening. Not really too much to report. She put him at a BCS of 2-2.5. His teeth need to be done, but are not horrible and not the cause of his condition. She wants to wait until he gains some weight before doing his teeth and getting his shots done. She took blood to run bloodwork and also took a sample from the hairless lump that he has on the side of his neck (it does not appear to be a sarcoid but so she wants to rule out melanoma or other cancers - it does not feel like that melanoma though, it is sort of squishy). I guess that it has showed up in the last four years and has grown some, although the previous owner said her vet didn't think it was anything to worry about. A picture of it is below. We are also going to run a fecal on him - we weren't able to get a sample because she showed up just after he had his stall cleaned, and he didn't want to poop for us just then. We'll get one today.

I noticed that funny growth in the previous picture you posted. Lets hope it is just a cyst or something of that sort.

Tammy informed me that Krabask used to be used as a babysitter to foals and weanlings, so I promoted him to the job today, and everyone seems very happy!

We got the results back from the tests run and sadly, the lump on Krabask's neck is cancerous. We don't know the type yet or if it is invasive, the next step will be to excise the entire thing and send it in to the lab. Hopefully, it is limited to that lump and nothing more. The bloodwork came back with him being a little bit anemic, and his white blood cell count was off a bit as well. Which could be related to the cancer, or could not. We won't know more until we run more tests. Until then, he continues to be perky and bright and have a great appetite. Jingles for Krabask!

Well, dang it. I was hoping since he was not grey, it would not be a cancer. Lets hope it has not gone anywhere and is localized on that lump. He does not have any other growths anywhere else does he?
Jingles coming from Laurie and the herd.

That is really too bad.
Fortunately horses don't fret about their lab results. With Biscotti and other youngsters to manage, he wouldn't have time anyway.

I'm just glad that he's in a place where he will get the help he needs! Many jingles his way!

Angel, same here - I'm just so glad he is getting vet care now! Hopefully the lump will be able to be removed with no residual effects.
