I think part of the problem was that Hawkins was refusing any grain that did not have some sweet feed in it. Probably we are going to need to get Clayton to experiment some more to find something that Hawkins will eat that isn't loaded with sugar.

The Vet gave them a diet plan for Hawkins. That included NO sweet feed. Not sure how Hawkins feels about that.

They make a sugar free molasses that you can buy at most grocery stores. Also, you can try Splenda and/or sugar free jello. Stabilized rice bran has a flavor that most horses like, as does anise (the spice). It's tough to do a cushings/IR diet when you're boarding unless you can develop something that is very low in sugar and starch that the horse will eat and that the barn manager will fix.
If you can get LMF feeds up there, they make two products that are low enough in sugar and starch for these horses. They are: LMF Carb Complete and LMF Low Carb Stage One. And, Sterrett Bros. makes a complete feed, with balanced minerals that many Cushing's horses can safely eat.
Some other feeds to try: Manna Pro BeetPulp Pellets (to be served very wet), Triple Crown Lite. Alfalfa is usually very low in sugar and would probably be good for him IF he could tolerate alfalfa before he got sick.
My old standby is soaked alfalfa pellets and rinsed beet pulp shreds sweetened with sugar free syrup, and sprinkled with sugar free starlight peppermint candies.
You are extremely lucky to have a vet that knows anything at all about feeding these horses. The vet schools teach nutrituion about like the med schools teach nutrition, which is to say hardly at all.
I'll find the chart listing the glycemic index of common horse feeds and post it here. It was a thesis project of some equine specialist at CSU, Fresno. Very interesting if you're sufficiently anal about what your horse eats.
I found the chart and will post it over in the Cushings Management Section.

I have 8 - 50 lb. bags of Rice Bran donated by my company for rescue horses. Supaloma is going to take some for Sarah but there is plenty if Hawkin needs some. We just need someone to take it to Claytons.

Where are you diamond? I live in Port Orchard, but I go to Clayton's once a week or so. I could take it out there if you would like.

Diamond's way up north in Ferndale. Gypsy, you go to Clayton's once a week? Have you seen our girls and Ish lately? Can you get us some pictures next time you go?

Sure, my digital won't turn on so we are taking it in, but we need it by the 17th for family pics so anytime after that I can. Ishyboy is always way out with the fellows in the big pasture so I don't get to say hi, but the girls are always close by the barn when I am there. They are all so cute. I can't remember who is who all the time, but last Sunday when I was there and it was feeding time, we got to help and a couple of them were actually sharing a dinner plate, and there was an empty pile available, it was sweet. I think it was Vivian and someone else. Deliany is so pretty. She has a very girly look about her.

As advertised, I am putting up a link to a list of sources for molasses free beet pulp in the horse care (Cushing's management) section. The list is now too long to cut and paste, hence the link.
This is important information because skinny Cushing's horses, like Hawkins, can't eat enough hay to put on the weight they need, yet can't eat grain or sugars, because that causes laminitis.
It's also important because caretakers have enough to do without having to SOAK the beet pulp for hours to remove the molasses that is commonly put on the beet pulp to keep the dust down and make it more palatable.
Also, let me add that beet pulp, like Scotch whiskey, is an acquired taste. Start with just a little in the ration, with some sugarfree sweetener mixed in.

thanks for letting me know, I think about him everyday, I check his thread and try to keep up with what is going on with him. I would love to see a photo of him with his weight gain. He is such a regal looking gentleman. I'm so glad he is with Clayton too. Thanks again for letting me know.

Photos courtesy of certified girl, who was one of yesterday's great "beauty parlor" crew ( he's still on the skinny side, but looking much better since he's been on his meds.) "What is it about Hawkins that makes you want to just hug him? Hawkins is truly a cool horse. I had never met him before, but in his feedlot picture I remember him looking somewhat forlorn. Not now, what a twinkle those eyes have, he knows he is loved."

I think maybe because he has such a kind and gentle face. And like the others, he didn't deserve to end up on a feedlot.

Sharon - here's one from last August but it didn't come out very well - I think the difference in his face compared to two weeks ago is astounding!
