They were given instructions regarding his diet. The senior feed, rice bran and oil.

I told Clayton we'd get him a soaking boot for soaking Hawkins' abcesses. We should bring that to him on Saturday. Lildun do you have one he could use, or should I go buy one?

Clayton said Hawkins would stand with his foot in a bucket for 12 minutes and not one second longer. He was doubtful Hawkins would agree to stand with two feet in a bucket, or two buckets....so the boot should come in handy. I'll pick one up before Saturday.

Sharonb,
Actually more SAFE horses were moved to Clayton and Gwendie's place this week... in addition to Ishmael and Larkspur, who were already there, Delaney, Vivian, Basset, Azalea and Rainbow are now munching away in Elma. Maybe Rainbow is showing the 'newbies' around, since she was at Clayton's originally.

LDH: Before I found this thread, I posted the following in the Cushing's Management thread:
Does Hawkins need the meds?
For what it's worth, I had my cushing's mare on chasteberries for several years to good effect. When it seemed CBs weren't as effective as they were initially, I went to pergolide. I order this from American Vet Pharmacies of Houston. If your vet will allow his office to recieve it for you, it is less that $1 day, with free shipping. I'll give you the rest of the info if you need it.
I'm something of a veteran of the Yahoo Cushing's group, and know where all the info is stored, and even understand most of it.
Off the top of my head: forego the Senior feed for Hawkins. If he is abscessing, he has likely foundered at sometime in the recent past, and the last thing he needs is grain and molasses. He could have molasses-free beetpulp, though, to help with his weight. And stabilized rice bran helps, too. Also, his pergolide dosage should be split between am and pm, should he be resistant to the taste. (The form I use is a fruit-flavored powder which mare LOVES. I mix it with a handful of rice bran so that she doesn't lose any.
I am blessed with both the cushing's mare and an Insulin Resistant (think Type2 diabetes in people) School Master, so I've had to deal with diets A LOT.
