There are so many forgotten horses out there that SAFE would like to be able to help, but the sad truth is that we are seriously limited by the number of foster homes we have at our disposal. We really need a few more people who can offer a temporary home to even just one horse in need. We're looking for foster homes have adequate shelter and turnout, the ability to feed twice a day and to monitor the horse's health and weight, and enough experience to be able to care for a horse safely. SAFE will cover vet and farrier expenses for horses in foster care, and can also help with feeding costs if needed. If you are interested in getting more involved with SAFE by becoming a foster parent, we'll ask you to fill out an application, provide references, and allow us to conduct a site visit. We do these things to help assure the best and safest experience for both the foster family and the foster horse. So if you want to get involved in this way, please send an email to adopt@safehorses.org and a volunteer will assist you with the approval process. Thanks so much! Jaybird

Hi! I just wanted to let you know that I am looking around for pasture property w/shelter that is for rent in the Eastern King County area. If I can find some I will post about it so that we could put horses there. Also if you know of a place in these areas please let me know and I will look into leasing it for this purpose. So long as it is in Eastern King County or Southern Snohomish County (Bothell - Woodinville) I will be able to feed and check the horses twice daily.

littlered, thanks so much! Let us know if you find anything. There are a couple of us in the Snohomish/Monroe area so you're looking in precisely the right place. Thanks again for the offer of help, it is hugely appreciated.
and welcome to SAFE!! ;D

Hey all - I am resurrecting this thread because we still have a desperate need for foster homes! As you know, with the exception of Silvida who is in Elma and Bassett who is in training in Idaho, all the SAFE horses are at my farm in Monroe. I have only 5 acres here and currently 4 horses of my own here, plus one more that is supposed to come back to me from a lease this fall. This puts me at far too many for the winter months, and means that there is no way that SAFE can take on another horse in need without more foster homes. If you or someone you know may be able to assist with fostering a horse(s), please contact me at jaime@safehorses.org. Preferably, we are looking at a free foster situation where you cover feed and provide care for the horse, with SAFE covering all vet and farrier costs. We will consider reiumbursing feed expenses in certain circumstances. Requirements for foster homes would be similar to that of adoptive homes (see our Policies under the FAQ section of this board) in terms of safe fencing (no barbed wire), access to shelter or a stall, plenty of turnout and enough land/horse ratio to limit the mud in the winter. We have several horses in need of foster care, from the barely handled to ridable so please state your experience level and any limitations as to the type of training or health issues you are willing to handle. If you have experience dealing with OTTBs right off the track, that is also a plus, as we would like to be able to help rehome some more TBs as well. Financially, with the sale of the trailer and other donations, as well as a few recent adoptions, we are in a position where would could theoretically take on a few more horses in need, if we have the place for them! We are also looking into using some of the funds to getting some training on some of the horses that are ready for it, as Basset has completed her 90 days and will be ready for adoption as soon as she returns from Idaho. So, even if you don't have space yourself, ask around to horse people you know and let us know if you hear of anything that may work for us. We do have a foster contract and the situation needs to be in reasonable driving distance from at least one of our board members so that we can check in on the horse on a regular basis, so preferably in the western washington/oregon area. Thanks everyone!

If we can do it, meaning if our pasture can handle it, I am sure I can convince hubby to fostering at least one. We just don't know until we start getting more pasture set up; however, last night when I was out cutting back those yummy, but painful blackberry bushes, I saw a nice size area that appears to be all bushes (on the right side of the driveway just as you turn towards our house) that we can maybe have taken out, so that might be another possibility of pasture area...we shall see, but I hope so!

Shay, that's awesome! I work in Issaquah so I could easily stop over and take a look at your place. Can you do me a favor and go to our website here: safehorses.org/safe/forms.htmand download a copy of our foster application and email it back to me? Thanks so much!

Once again, we have more horses in need than we have foster homes for...so please, if you have space available or know of someone who does, please read through this thread to learn more about becoming a SAFE foster home, and if you think you might be able to help us, please let us know!
thanks everyone!

Once the weather turns for the better (like in June/July maybe?) I might be able to talk the hubby into taking in ONE horse if the vet and farrier expenses can be covered by SAFE (preferably not a senior horse, though, as we lost Lana and my little boy still remembers her and he's only 3 1/2 right now!). I will run it by the hubby in the coming months and then we can go from there.

Appealing to the "noble" in all of us... cold, cold, cold.
If I didn't board, I would be all over this. A couple of years from now, we'll be building our place. And then it's on. I own two now... but we're building a big barn. YAY!
