Redmond was rescued by former CBER-volunteers. As CBER focuses on, for the most part, sound horses, CBER had opted not to rescue Redmond due to his huge ankle and obvious unsoundness. Private funds were raised by Schwung and Jaybird to rescue Redmond and bring him home to safety, if only to have him humanely euthanized. As it turns out, no such drastic steps will be necessary. Redmond's enlarged ankle is completely fused, making his lameness largely mechanical. He does have some arthritis and would benefit from a low-dose of bute or Aleve to stay comfortable - but even without anything he prances and bucks and plays. He needs some corrective trimming on his bad foot as his inability to bend the joint caused him to drag the toe and caused the hoof to grow very upright. He also has some soreness in his shoulder/bicep area that may also be part of the limp and will be getting some massage therapy to help break up the adhesions and scar tissue in the muscle fibers. Redmond is about 16.1 hands and 17 years old (has an 'S' tattoo - making him born in 1989). He has an unreadable tattoo. He is extremely sweet, affectionate, and well mannered. He does weave in a stall and because of his arthritis would do best in a pasture environment with free access to shelter. Redmond is free to a loving, permanent home. References and gift contract required. Contact Jaime for more information: jtaft1221@hotmail.comMore pictures of Redmond here: photobucket.com/albums/b144/schwung/Redmond/

I have uploaded a few new photos of Redmond here. He is doing wonderfully, Dr. Hannah got to see him last Friday and fell in love with him. He got his first round of shots. The rest are in his photo album above.

Yes, his tail was chopped - the mark of the kill-only horse.

Yes, his tail was chopped - the mark of the kill-only horse. What a handsome guy! At least he still has a mane - poor Bubba lost his tail AND his mane too.

Redmond is at my house in Preston. He seems to be doing better than he was, I am talking about the limping that is. He finally got turned out with my other 2 horses. I have Marisol from the feedlot, and another older retired QH. The first day he was introduced to my horses, it was really uneventful to my surprise.... Marisol hid behind her guardian Smoke, and Redmond tried to prance around to show them how big and cool he was, but then he realized it wasn't working. So after about 5 minutes of Redmond showing off they all were standing around lounging in the sun together. It has been pretty peaceful ever since. Redmond definitely rules the pasture! I have been doing my best to fatten him up, but it doesn't seem to be working too well. I will be posting pics soon he is quite the handsom boy, and very well behaved! Nothing bothers him, dogs, being bothered while eating, nothing.

thanks Nikki for all you are doing. We all fell in love with Redmond when Schwung introduced him and are really happy that he is safe. The fact he is doing so well is the cherry on the cake. Looking forward to some pictures of a happy Redmond...
