Redmond is doing well. Some days he doesn't limp at all but others he limps a lot. He is pretty funny because I have 2 Filly's at my house and when they start running around he has to act all big and macho for them and run too. He is beautiful when he is running, so graceful but you can definitely tell that he is sore afterward.
I was talking to a friend about how to put weight on him and they were suggesting corn oil added to his grain... Any good suggestions? I tried beet pulp soaked for hours, but neither one of my oldies will eat it. I will try to get some new pics up soon.

Nikki - suggestions. First, what kind of grain are you giving him?
Let's pick up some MSM and maybe even some powdered aspirin to give him to help with the soreness.
Then, to add fat, start with a good high-fat grain (Ultium is good, but hard to find). If you can't find Ultium, the LMF Showtime G is I believe 6% fat, which is a good start. Then buy a bag of the pelleted rice bran - its stabilized and ready to feed - no soaking required - and adds a lot of fat. My pinicky hard-keeping TB will eat this stuff, if I mix it in with grain. Oil is good also for adding fat but can be messy, so I prefer other methods of getting the fat in. Another weight-building product I have had success with is "Cool Calories", which is a powdered supplement. It smells really good so I assume it tastes good, my TB doesn't seem to mind it at all.
This week is crazy, I am going to try to find some time next week after work to stop in and have a visit with him, check out this weight problem. Is he losing weight or is he just not gaining it (he was ribby when he came)? Are you feeding free-choice grass hay?
I believe Bonnie sent you some money to help with feeding costs. Let me know if you need any more help. And thank you again for all you are doing for Redmond!

Redmond has been adopted!!!
He is going to a wonderful family in Monroe, just minutes from my house, so I can visit him all the time. He will live on 2.5 acres with a lovely new BarnPros barn with one other gelding and just be a companion and a pet. Their barn is still in the permitting phase, so he will stay with his wonderful foster mom Nikki for a few more months but officially, he has been adopted!
Congratulations to Valerie!! Thank you for adopting our very special boy!

Hi Everyone! I'm Valerie and Redmond's new home to be. I just wanted to say what an awesome group of people you are and I feel extremely fortunate to not only be able to provide Redmond with a home for the rest of his life but to have stumbled on a group of such caring people. You all are just amazing and thank you Jaime for all of your advice and thank you Nikki for taking care of Redmond until the barn is done and we are ready to go. Have no fear - I will be giving regular Redmond updates and pictures probably to the point of annoyance! He IS a very special horse and I intend to treat him like the prince he is. I expect his pics will show him with a chapped nose for all the nose kisses to come! Thank you to everyone who help save this horse - I cannot thank you enough!

Valerie, thank you and welcome!! I am so delighted that things have worked out so well for Redmond. He is, as you now know, a very special horse. I first met him at the feedlot in Yakima, and I will never forget the way he politely but persistently followed Jaime and I around while we worked with the other horses. It was totally amazing, like he knew exactly what was happening to him and figured out his best chance to be saved and went to work on us. And I'm so glad he did because he would not be here today if he hadn't literally asked us to save him. You could almost say that Redmond saved himself. A very smart and perceptive horse to be sure. But my heart skips a beat when I think about how close he came to death.
Thank you so much for opening your heart and home to him. I look forward to meeting you!

Believe me - I am going to tell that story to everyone who talks to me about my animals or horses in general. It is an amazing story and I will be sure to always listen to him very carefully. I look forward to meeting you too! I cannot WAIT to get this barn built and get him over here.... I am just the luckiest person ever!!
