Thought I would give a quick update on Redmond.
Mr. Redmond not only plays everyday with Chewy but has taken to antagonizing my 3 dogs - he purposely hangs by the backyard fence hoping to get the dogs going and plays many rounds of trotting up and down the fence with them, throwing his head up and down while trotting with the front end and doing that bunny bounce left and right with his hind end (the "why I oughtta....(kick you) bounce. Then turns around and does it again. Gets my dogs barking and running and everyone is having a great time. Hope there are no day sleepers around me...... Redmond is having a blast!

Update on Redmond... My husband got the honors of being first to ride Redmond. Today was " OK everybody who is a horse on this property is getting a BATH!" day. So, clean horsey, husband petting clean horsey, horsey sleepy after bath, hot day and dinner.
I get halter and lead, husband gets on Redmond bareback. Lead husband around - appears Redmond is broke to death - as we all suspected.. What a good boy he was, with The Chew in tow of course. I just love that horse!

Yeah, I don't think you were supposed to discover that. I think he liked being Chewy's pasture pet
Where's the pictures though? ;D

I know I know...this is my 2nd week of vacation and I will try to remember to grab my camera because I do want to get some nice shots of them now that they are all sparkly clean.
It had always been my plan to get Redmond on some kind of walking program...I thought once my arena got finished (hopefully by next spring) that while I ride Chewy -either my husband or Lisa (yes YOU Lisa) can hop on Redmond and walk him around to help keep him fit. He's such a good punkin.

Just an update on Mr. Redmond. Redmond is now becoming the cuddly horse I had always hoped he would. For so long he seemed distant and really disinterested in being petted or fussed over (unlike Chewy who LOVES being kissed on the nose and insists that everyone who comes in contact with him kiss and fawn all over him - including the farrier). So I have been working with Redmond in giving him lots of cuddles during treat time and FINALLY - he likes it now! In fact he likes it so much that if Chewy tries to barge in, Redmond is pretty free with the nips to Chewy's face which ticks Chewy off no end. Chewy will end up pinning his ears and tossing his head up and down but Redmond won't backdown...he "protects" me and enjoys his time with me. F I N A L L Y! I can't tell you how many times I had my feelings hurt because sometimes - it really seemed he could have cared less whether I was there or not. In fact, if I did try to give him a kiss, very often he would either grind his teeth or do a slow motion bite in my direction (like he would do to Chewy). It was very discouraging so I cannot tell you how happy this change makes me! Gee, it only took 2 years...........

That's wonderful Valerie! I knew he had it in him, but after he was safe and knew it then it seemed like he decided to hold a bit of a grudge against mankind for what happened to him. Can't say I blamed him. I am so glad to hear that you have broken through that!

How great that he finally broke down and is liking affection! I know exactly how you feel. I found Dally's scritchy spot this fall and it always just brightens my day that I can get Dally to react to something and enjoy human contact so much after the rough life he has had. Few things are more satisfying than that!

I would like to report (for those of you anxiously following his progress) that Mr. Redmond's tail is now slightly below his fetlocks. For those of you who are newer to this board - look at the first page of this thread - and note the length of a tail on a horse bound for slaughter.

I should do a before and after on Sunline's butt view too...she also had her tail lopped at the hocks when I got her, and now it is down where it belongs!

I just realized it's been awhile since I have given a true Redmond update. So, here it is.
Redmond is still battling intermittent lameness on the fused fetlock. We (my husband and I) believe this has to do with it being 98% fused and that 2% movement can be painful. There are times that he walks almost completely sound (as sound as a fused joint can allow) and then the very next day he will be head bobbing lame and will actually many times stand with most of his weight on his good leg - you can tell because his bad leg is actually bent at the "knee".
I have been making him wear his tennis shoe (ez boot) 3 days on and 1/2 day off to help support the leg and foot.
I have Hannah coming out to do acupuncture sessions on him in the hope for some relief for him. I love watching Redmond get chiro and acupuncture sessions. He loves Hannah and really enjoys the sessions. He recently seemed stiff and sore in the croup area so he got that worked on. He seems to really like his head and upper neck worked and does alot of yawning and chewing/licking for that part.
The best news I have is he continues to become the most cuddliest horse ever. Now he searches me out to give him hugs and kisses and will bite Chewy if Chewy tries to barge in on "our time". I truly believe 100% in my heart that he knows we are trying to help him. He willingly stands for his tennis shoe application, swallows his bute when it's given to him instead of trying to spit it out (even tho he makes it clear that it tastes horrible) - and is a good boy for Hannah for his treatments.
Yesterday, he was laying down in the pasture (sternally) and I walked over and sat with him and stroked his face and neck for a minute - then I got up and stood behind him and pulled him over to laying flat out. Then I gave him a massage from neck to hip for about a good 10 minutes. I was really happy that he trusted me enough to feel comfortable enough to be pulled down (that's a first for me - I have never tried that before) and I think he really enjoyed the whole session.
I couldn't ask for more - I love this horse.
