I went and visited Redmond last weekend (Nikki was kind enough to allow me to come and see him unannounced) - spent some quality time with him. He was having one of his really bad days...very lame. So - after brushing and fussing over him (interspersed with treats of course) I gave him a shoulder and chest massage which Jaime showed me how to do the first time I met him. He dropped his head, his lips started quivering and he closed his eyes. Not for long but clearly this does bring some relief to him. And after a bit of that - he made it very clear that he didn't want me to do that anymore. When he is done with something...he is done. Barn progress: 1 more "ok" needed from the health dept and we can begin construction. Next time - I'm buying a property WITH a barn and covered arena. Yikes. This is a lot of no fun.
Cannot wait to get this all done and have all my horses home with me. I'm moving Mr. Cribber to Cascade Meadows on Saturday (See post on horse/seller rescue? topic under general rescue). So at least he will be just down the road until construction is done. Looking forward to having Redmond here so he can get as many shoulder massages as he needs or wants or not! But he looks great! Thanks Nikki! ;D Valerie

Redmond is doing great. He had his feet trimmed up on Saturday and I had a very interesting chat with the farrier about Redmond. She said that she had been in the horse racing business and recognized Redmond's fetlock issue as possibly being an osselet which is a common injury/body defense mechanism of race horses. She also said the best thing to do for him would is to keep him in a place where he can continue to move (constant pasture access which he has now) and to work him. To say that I was stunned would be an under-statement.
She also pointed out to me that his shoulder on that side was severely atrophied from disuse which to be honest, I had never stood in front of him and compared to the other one. So, my next step is to have my vet verify the osselet and get recommendations for some type of work schedule to help rebuild that shoulder muscle if that is possible. Fingers crossed, he may end up being my 2nd riding horse! (we would have to pass on the jumper circuit but maybe some light flat work?? Who knows!) How about that? All I want to do is do whatever I can to make him the most comfortable and happy/healthy. She thought that maybe he ended up where he did not because he was not loved or ride-able - but because they probably (owners) sold him cheap because of the injury and thus he ended up where we dread to think any of our own horses from our past ended up. If people only knew. Last night I bought 2 AVID horse micro-chips - I will make darn sure he never sees that place again!!!

Hey Valerie - hate to disagree with your farrier but I doubt very much that it is just an osselet or that Redmond will ever be ridable. I am going to PM you with the contact info for my vet who has his xrays and make sure you have access to Redmond's records. We can also send those over to your vet if you like...but the damage in the fetlock is extensive, with so much bone remodeling and arthritis that its impossible to make out what the original injury was - probably a fracture. Regardless, with his ankle fused such as it is no amount of work is going to fix that.

No problem whatsoever - and yes - I would like to have all of his records and any x-rays I can get for additional review. The intent was never to try and fix the fetlock - it was to reverse muscle atrophy and keep whatever mobility he has (not to lose any ground) and increase mobility and flexibility if at all possible. Much the same concept as those who have arthritis it is better for them to keep moving then to sit still and wither from disuse. Merely looking for bettering him physically any way I can.

Valerie - I love to hear how much you want to help this guy be comfortable. I know he will be in such good hands with you!

Valerie - definately agree with you on doing what can be done to deal with the shoulder problem. My vet felt that was where most of his pain was coming from - not the ankle. Think about if you had to walk without bending your ankle - you have to keep you leg straight and stiff which puts a strain on your hip/back - or for Redmond, his shoulder. Dr. Colton might have some other ideas for how to deal with the muscle atrophy and soreness that has developed there and certain exercises or stretches that might help - but he definately recommended first starting with massage. Chiropractic wouldn't hurt either.

Valerie - I called Dr. Colton's office and they will be mailing Redmond's xrays to you. You can also call and ask to talk to Dr. Colton directly about Redmond at 425-402-1910.

Thanks Jaime! All good things will be in the works for Redmond. Once I get the x-rays I will have my vet review and talk about different therapies. I just don't want to rule anything out.
I just wish I could get the barn built faster so I could get him here so I could do therapy with him every day.
