This just drives me nuts. My vet is under the same impression. When I took on Sunny he warned me to be careful, rescue horses just weren't worth it and that he knew a girl who'd just broken her collar bone that week on a rescue... Good grief, I love him as a vet but good golly, who hasn't been hurt on a horse?
Glad Rusty and Pal are finally looking towards a positive future!

What are we looking at for these boys's adoption fees?

If you put your hand threw the fence, Rusty will back up his butt to you, so you can give it a good scratch. It's very funny to watch,, even funnier to do!

Rusty did well in the wind storms. We are working daily on his head shy issue. He's learning to trust more everyday. You can scratch his butt all day but "leave my eyes and forehead alone." It's getting better. He likes it here and now has access to the west pasture, good grass and a little bit of clover. He'll get only a couple of hours a day there. Call his name and he comes running!!!!! I will post pictures in a few days...

Rusty is very lucky to have found the good life...please do post pictures of this neat boy.
Can anyone clarify his "girthy-ness". I read in an earlier post that he bucked when the girth was too tight. How tight is "too" tight for him? Has anyone considered a chiropractor for him? I can't adopt another horse at the moment but I'd be willing to sponser this boy.

None of that has been confirmed...that came from the previous owner. Who knows if the saddle fit properly? I don't think there was any problems when Cat and Chelsea worked with him. As soon as we can we will get him assessed under saddle and see how he does.

He did not show any sign of girthiness when I tacked him up and rode him. We used a hunt seat saddle with an elastic ended leather girth. I do not crank suddenly on girths though - I do them slowly (but eventually snugly). I don't like a loose saddle at all so I can assure you it was solidly tight when I finally got on him. He showed NO sign of bad behavior...no buck, no "hump in the back." He rode to me like he was not terribly educated, but like a horse who would pack anybody safely on trails. Rusty is just very calm. Sitting on him is like sitting on a merry go round horse - he is just not the type to do anything sudden or unexpected.

Rusty Update: He's settled in even more now. Snickers at me everytime I walk past the hay storage. He is doing very well with his weight. The SAFE foster home who had him before did an excellent job on a balanced diet, as his winter coat is thick and even. He's very well mannered and not pushy on the ground when it's apple time! He's still very calm but,, he's also figuring out what it is to be a horse. To romp, play, and kick it up when the back pasture is opened and clover awaits him. The love of life and sparkle in the eye is returning. He's still troubled by the cat who sits on the feed box, looking for mice, they just stare at each other. He stands still for grooming and partial sheath cleaning, with no halter or lead. Will also "free stand" for his front hoofs to be picked. I'm not taking any chances with the rear ones , tho!!! I've been at the power end before with unmanagable horses. This is how we are working on the trust issue. He is learning that the human hand is kind, and it's okay to want to be touched, good things will come. I feel he is ready for adoption. I know in my heart his long term forever home awaits him out there. He's a fantastic animal, looking to bond with the right person> You can see it in his eyes, they saw " love me, and I'm yours forever!" He has earned this in life. As care givers of horses, we should all set this as our goal for these beautiful animals.

Rusty got his teeth done, shots, and his sheath cleaned on Saturday. He still had a wolf tooth! Just one, a small one, but still...sad that he was being ridden with that in there, I am sure that didn't feel good! It's all gone now:
History/Presenting Concern: Due for exam/float/vx Physical Exam: Temp-98.8, Pulse-40 and Resp-12 = WNL (within normal limits), MM: pink, CRT < 2sec, GI +/+ = WNL. Heart, lung and GI sounds = WNL. BCS of 5.5/9. Bright, alert and responsive. Eyes, ears, nose, lymph nodes, sinuses, musculoskeletal, integument = WNL other than: hooves due for trim. Dental exam revealed: buccal and lingual points, rostra hooks at 106/206, mild caudal hooks at 311/411, mild wave mid 300/400’s, due for dental float, wolf tooth at 105. Dental float: (2xyl,2xyl, lidocaine block for wolf tooth extraction): routine dental float and wolf tooth extraction, canine reduction, bit seats. Sheath: moderate smegma and bean, cleaned. Vaccination: Flu/Rhino (IN), Tetanus (IMl) Assessment/Plan: Looks good overall. Due for vaccinations/float in 1 year.
