I like Nick. He looks like a sweetie. And he's so pretty! I always did like Rusty's coloring...and he's much like Rusty!
eta: my 3 year old son made me change this. He's not pretty. Boys are cool and handsome. LOL ;D

Rusty got a haircut and a shave today (mane pulled so it's all one length, and whiskers, bridle path, and ears were clipped.) He was SO good! No fuss at all! This saddle did not fit at all and I couldn't use it. But we still got to go for a ride. He was a total star!! Okay, that's it for the photos for awhile. I told you I'd inundate you with photos!! (but now it's time to give focus to the Holidays and getting caught up around here!)

I LOVE Nick's breeding. I had a Two Eyed Jack grandson that was just a killer, fabulous open show horse. And you can't go wrong with Jaguar. When you said "foundation bred," I thought "what is she talking about?" because he looks nothing like your typical little Hancock/Poco Bueno/NFQHA type horse...but that's because he's not one! He's very well bred and he looks it. If he were a mare, he'd be nice enough to breed.

It was a busy Holiday, but I got to ride Rusty the day before yesterday. He is such a good boy! I am sooo lucky to have him. I just cannot get over how mellow he is. So far nothing bothers him. If he does get nervous, he is easily soothed by being pet and cooed at. What a superstar!! And he's coming along nicely under saddle and is becoming very responsive to leg pressure. We're still working on the walk and trot, he likes to stop trotting, but he's getting past the "stop" area and continues to trot through the bend. I'm so impressed and happy with him!! (Can I say this enough?!) On another note, I have Nick up for sale on Dreamhorse (ID #1145449). He is foundation bred: TWOEYEDNICELBAR ~ 76.953125% Foundation Quarter Horse Sire: SOLITAIRE JACK (93.75% FQH) Dam: JUSSEL'S MISSY BAR (60.15625% FQH) Well, has a lot of foundation breeding anyway! Rusty is eager to score Nick's large stall, Nick would like somebody to give him more love and attention- even though you can pull him out of the pasture after months without issue, and I wouldn't mind my hay bill being minimized a bit!

So, as you may or may not know, I have 3 horses that I currently ride. They are Nick my QH, Felix my Arabian, Rusty (my ADOPTED horse from SAFE). When riding the other day my daughter asked me which horse did I like the best? I told her that well, I like Felix best because he is the prettiest horse I have ever seen. I told her that I liked Nick the best because he has the best personality and has been my best friend. I told her that I liked Rusty the best because he is so fun to ride. Then I told her that I thought Rusty was a superstar and an amazingly smart horse. Nick has been sold and will go to his new home on Saturday. I will bawl like a baby on Saturday, I know this. But poor Nick just doesn't get the attention he deserves and needs to spend the rest of his life with his forever family, which I made absolutely sure he would. I also wish that I had more acreage, more money, and more time to keep 3 horses. So, I have designated Rusty to be my new best friend horse because he has that potential. He's vocal and will whinny when he sees me and come running. He loves to be brushed and is very social and always pokes his head out of his stall to see if I'm going to pet him or give him a treat. So, every night when I bring him into the barn for feeding, I have been just sitting and laying on him bareback and without a bridle in his stall- and in my pj's. He's so tolerant and so quiet even though it takes me about 5 times to actually jump up on him! I really really got lucky with this guy. SO lucky. Ya'll should be very very jealous!! hee. His training is coming along amazingly! We're working on leg yields and bending exercises. He tucks his little nose in and will trot around without stopping until I tell him it's time. We've started cantering and he's starting to get it. Not worried so much about leads at this point, but he's such a willing learner. He's sensitive and is picking up seat position, leg yields and voice commands faster than any human would. He's never once spooked even though my other horses have seen the scary horse-eating monster at the end of the arena. The best part? He's safe enough for my beginner-rider daughter who is 11 years old to actually RIDE with me, which is why I adopted Rusty in the first place! (I have been around enough horses the last 30 years to know what is safe and what isn't!) We just cruise around the arena and work on her instead of him. They are both superstars!! I really, really, really like this guy!!! I will send photos soon

We took Rusty on his first trail ride today. He's been great in the arena . . . Very responsive and always calm and easy to work with. But because of the terrific weather, my girlfriend and I decided to leave the kids and husbands and head for the trails! Rusty took two minutes (literally) to get into the straight-load trailer, and when we drove to the trails just a few minutes down the road. He didn't blink an eye at the unusual surroundings when we took both of the horses out. (He's only SIX YEARS OLD!!!) So, we tacked up and headed out. He was both lead horse and follower. He did amazing at both. NEVER spooked or even acted scared. We laughed because he blazed through everything without even flinching. And because he was the more mellow horse, I let my friend ride Rusty- Even though she's an experienced horse person who was once a wrangler but now breeds warmbloods- but doesn't have a trail-ready horse. Needless to say she was soooooo impressed with Rusty's forward movement, and easy temperament of going through narrow, winding trails, dark passages, steep hills and ravines, and was completely indifferent to horse-eating tree stumps. Needless to say she fell in love with him. Yay! Looks like I have a consistent summertime trail riding buddy AND a great trail horse that pretty much ANYBODY can ride. I just love this guy to death. He's the absolute best!!! I just want to say "Nah Nah Nah Nah Nah!" to all the people who were skeptical on "adopting" Rusty because their MUST be something wrong with the horse. NOPE. I scored BIG time and will gloat for quite some time!! On another note, my daughter and I can still hop on him any time without needing to be lounged. He picks up where he left off each time. I was in a car accident (t-boned by a BIG Ford F-150) and was sore and couldn't ride or do anything with any of my horses for about a month. When I did get back in the saddle, Rusty was as good as gold- even for my beginner 11-year-old daughter. He walks and trots with easy and without nagging . . . He was so green before that I thought he was lazy. He's NOT at all!!! He's quite forward moving now that he "gets it", however, the canter is still taking some work- He thinks it's a race. I'm not sure who he thinks he's going to beat- this in his own little head- but it's TROT TROT TROT 90 MPH and THEN the canter. (I hate ground work and loath lounging as a training method and only use lounging as a way to drain energy from an overly energetic horse . . . I suppose I picked the perfect horse for me- OBVIOUSLY.) But he's always a big pet to catch in the pasture (he catches me!) and always comes when I whistle. He has truly blessed my life. I'm thrilled to know that he will be with me for his entire lifetime. Thank you SO much for the Safe Horse Organization!!!!
