We had our fundraiser meeting yesterday and we've decided for our first event that we would do the ever popular garage sale!
I will be coordinating and I will need help. We are going to shoot for mid July which should give us enough time to gather a good bit of things to sell.
The very first thing I need is a place to have it. Here is what I am looking for:
Good location - close to heavy traffic area - easy to find. Plenty of parking Large yard / property - let's try to keep this at a residence or private facility - depending on how much stuff we collect - this could be a 1, 2 or 3 day sale - that means the items will be outside over night.
Also, I am planning on trying to find a place to store the items until the sale - so if you know of a good location AND a place to store the items close by - that would be GREAT! Of course we would prefer to have a free place to store them but since it will be a short collection time - renting a storage place shouldn't cost too much.
Please pm me your ideas - and we need to get the location nailed down really quickly so I can find close by storage.
And lastly - start that spring cleaning you've been putting off!!! Gently used items - no clothes. No junk. Remember - whatever does not sell will most likely be either hauled off and hopefully accepted by another charity or hauled to the dump which cuts into our profits.
Thank you for your participation in advance! Let's make some money for SAFE and the horses!!

Already going through my own stuff here - now if I can just be sure I don't end up buying more than I donate! I'm also going to be asking coworkers and friends for donations of items for the sale - it will give me a great opportunity to talk about SAFE and the great work it does.

Great!
A word of caution for anyone collecting items - be prepared to be tough about what we will accept. If it's junk or it's things like used dog beds, old cat pans - things that seriously need to be thrown out - don't take it.
Explain to them that we know what sells and what is typically left behind and that we want to make sure that we don't have to make a trip to the dump at the end.
It may be uncomfortable because no one likes having their stuff called "junk" - but hopefully you can soften up the message so they will understand.
Just a few more things that we should not take that doesn't sell - heavy desks - wood or metal. They are a pain to move and customer's know that too - you cannot GIVE those things away.
Don't take curtains or other things that are customized, blinds, curtain rods etc.
Again - no clothes - those are just a pain with little return for the hassle.
No computers, TV's etc - I know it seems like we should take these items but - remember - we will have to demonstrate that these work - that may be difficult. TV's are very often heavy and likely to break. And typically - people are looking to dump their old computer and NO ONE wants an old computer - they are also difficult to dispose of.
No mattresses, large cruddy couches/recliners. No old bedding/sheets - new is ok.
Look critically at items and think about if it's really worth taking or if someone is looking to dump it because they can't sell it either!
Let's try to concentrate on Art, good furniture, collectibles, antiques, tack, nice dish sets, nicer glassware, tools, garden items. Try to keep in mind that we have to CARRY all of these things so be reasonable on how much something weighs - let's not kill ourselves!

I would also like to say - and I know this is disgusting - but think about things like bed bugs - we really don't want to store clean items with dirty items and we don't want unhappy customers. Clean gently used or new. Use common sense.

I'd like to offer my truck to haul items that anyone would like to donate from the South Sound area. I live in Federal Way & my shop is in Fife. So if you're in the Tacoma, Puyallup, Auburn, Kent or South Seattle area...I can be your contact! I'll haul up a truck load to wherever we end up holding the garage sale.
If you can drop it with me, better but if you can't, let's talk about getting it picked up. I'll try to have an afternoon just prior to the sale to pick up your good stuff for the sale. My hubby probably won't be too keen on storing things for more than a couple of days so let's coordinate before the sale.

Ok folks - we have a few more details ironed out.
We will be having the sale at the end of June in Mukilteo. I need you all to get that spring cleaning in high gear - we don't have much time - and harrass your neighbors for some of their good stuff!
I will be completing the will take and won't take list tomorrow.
We are looking at the weekend of the 28th of June - we could use some pricers as well as general sales help and moving stuff from storage to the site. (hey - does that sound like fun or what!?!)
Time is short, funds are low. Let's do this one quick and dirty and get some money for the horses!
pm me if you can help, can supply tables, can pick stuff up...want to donate stuff...
thanks!

Well, now that this subject is somewhat semi-private.. - I want to say again that we are very short on time - we need to make some money for the horses and I have not received any responses yet in terms of committing to donating items for the sale. I realize that it may be early to get responses as you all are hopefully too busy collecting your items - but I am really depending on the people on this board, and your family and friends to supply the greatest portion of items to sell. We don't really have the time to go great guns on approaching strangers or do mailings. And we need set up pickup dates to get the stuff and put it in storage asap. Can I get you all to commit to donating items for the sale (remember - it's tax deductible) and pm me your location and dates when you will be ready for pick up so I can start making a schedule? Please? I would hate to have to cancel this whole thing for lack of items... thanks!

Ok I for sure will have stuff to donate. My mom is already plotting what she can get rid of, clearing out the house is one of her favorite activities!
I can bring my stuff to the garage sale...we have a truck and I'm planning on filling it with stuff to sell.
How do we feel about horse-stuff? I have a few sheets, some shipping boots, a few bridles...

Having sold or given away most of what I owned in 2005 when I moved to California to help my mom, I don't have a lot. But I already have one box and have asked some friends and coworkers if they have anything they might like to donate. Keeping fingers crossed I can come up with at least five or six boxes of things.
Valerie, I'm wondering about cutting and pasting your items that will be accepted or rejected on this thread. It was really thorough and gave me some ideas. Maybe it would give SAFE supporters some ideas as well?
