Has there been any interest in Shante? He is so pretty and sweet, I am surprised he hasn't been snatched up yet!

We're happy to announce that Shante has been adopted. His new home is in Beavercreek, OR, with a wonderful couple -- Kathy and Kevin-- who were looking for a horse that their grandkids could ride. They met Shante at the SAFE Benefit Show, and after working with him and riding him a few days later, decided that he would be perfect for them. Kathy and Kevin also offered to take Buckie as a foster with the possibility of adopting, which was a godsend to us because of my truck problems. I'm happy to say that they fell in love with the little guy, and despite the fact that he may not be a suitable mount for an inexperienced rider, they have decided to adopt Buckie as well. Here are some photos from the day that Kathy and Kevin came out for a second meeting with Shante and Buck. These pictures were taken at Robin's farm (Bella's foster home) after Robin came to the rescue to help us get Buckie and Shante away from the show grounds after the show was over: Kathy has joined this bulletin board, and I'm hoping that she will keep us up to date on Shante's progress and of course, send pictures!!

Oh, I am so excited! I was the one that introduced them to the boys, and they were SO nice! And with Bonnie's truck problems...it was all in the right place at the right time...just meant to happen!
Welcome to our board, and just in case you haven't noticed yet, we LOVE pictures here!

Congrats Kathy and Kevin. Shante is one special boy and lucky to have you care for him. Enjoy him and Mr Personality Buckman too!

update from Kathy on Buck and Shante:
Hi, Just an update. We took the boys on a trail ride yesterday and today. Of course Shante was as mellow as usual, he did great, kept him at a slow pace though. Bucky on the other hand was his usual lets go and get there first. I had to work really hard to keep him at a slower pace, I was really tired when when we got back home. That was yesterday, today, I was shopping and Kevin had one of the grand kids on him in the yard, and he was as mellow as Shante, with a child on him. I'm really impressed, he is truly a wonderful horse. They are both still putting on weight, but are looking good and bonding with us. All the horses have figured out their place in the "herd" so it's peaceful in the pasture. Kathy

Have we heard lately how Shante and Buck fared through the winter with Kathy and Kevin?

I visited them on New Year's Eve day, their adopters were kind enough to let me visit though they weren't home. The boys were doing fine - both were blanketed - under the blanket Bucky looked like he'd picked up a little weight, and Shante too - they were frisky (it was windy and starting to snow) and you'd never guess they were oldsters. Here's a photo of Shante in the pasture that day: I'll head out again soon for a visit. Sorry I forgot to update!

It is with great sadness that I pass along the news that Shante colicked this morning and was put to sleep. Shante's adoptive mom in Beavercreek OR sent us this message: Hi, it's very sad news. Shante was down this morning, we called the vet and she determined after quite a lot of treatment that he had a twisted intestine. He was in a lot of pain, so we let him go. We will bury him on our property in the back under his favorite trees. Kevin is going to have his shoes mounted with a picture of him. Kathy Shante was a sweet old man who will be deeply missed. He and Bucky were very fortunate to have been adopted by the Kiels, and we can rest assured that Shante spent his final year being loved and cared for in the manner in which he deserved. Our sincere condolences to the Kiels for their loss. Rest in peace, sweet old man. photo by Liz Stabbert Photography

How sad for the family. I am glad Shante knew kindness (and plentiful food) in his last year. RIP Sweet Shante..
