Shante is a 27 year old Arab gelding, recently rescued from a classic case of "two many horses, not enough money to feed them". There were several private individuals as well as Animal Control involved in this case and helping the horses in this persons' care. Shante was locked in a stall standing on a foot of manure, and had obviously not been receiving enough feed. He was one of the worst horses at this location.
Shante has had all of his vet care donated by Dr. Hannah, including having his teeth done which were in very bad condition. He has a case of rain rot that is clearing up and a healing injury to his left hind leg, but other than that, and being scarily thin, he is bright, alert, and interested in his surroundings, and you can see a very beautiful horse lives under his shaggy coat. Although he is not out of the woods yet, it is hopeful that Shante will make a full recovery. We have been told that he was previously used in 4H and pony club, and is a great kid's horse. He was ridden by kids just last summer on the trails. Being an arab, he still has many years left in him! His foster mom reports that yesterday when she called him in for his dinner, his tail went up over his back (as only an arab's can) and he galloped to the gate to meet her. This is the most life she has seen out of him since his rescue two weeks ago.
Currently Shante is in foster care in rehabilitation. He will probably require several months of getting weight on him before he will be available for adoption, where we hope he can be another child's horse and companion. Donations towards his care and feeding costs are always greatly appreciated!
UPDATE: Shante has gained all his weight back and has been moved to a new foster home in Silverdale, WA. A vet exam did reveal a heart murmur, common in older horses. Our vet felt he would be fine for light riding (at his age, he should not be ridden hard anyway), but he should be monitored for signs of exercise intolerance. He has not shown any signs of exercise intolerance since being in our care when being ridden or lunged. He also has cataracts, which the vet felt while his vision is somewhat affected (like looking through film), it should not get any worse. He does not seem to have any trouble seeing.
Editing because I had his name wrong!
