Parelli is owned by SAFE Volunteer/Foster mom Chelsea (winterslakefarm), and SAFE is assisting with finding him a new home. He will be adopted out under a SAFE Adoption contract with special provisions for his farrier needs.
Located in Graham, WA.
Adoption Fee: $500
From Chelsea:
Parelli is approx. 10 years old, 15.1hh gray QH-type gelding saved from the feedlot in May of 2006. He was said to have been a barrel racing horse in his past. When I got him he had a very slight intermittent lameness. I had digital radiographs taken of him which showed some navicular type changes. The thing that both the vet and I were perplexed by was that he showed far less lameness than a typical “navicular” horse typically would. Never an outright lameness, just a reluctance to freely cross over when turning. I decided to haul him to Mission Farrier School where Mark Plumlee and his students would work on him for the next few months. Right away we discovered he was negative to hoof tests- indicating that while he may have been symptomatic of Navicular at some point, that was no longer the issue. Eventually we discovered that he had more of a chronic tendonitis type condition from poor shoeing and the resulting incorrect way of traveling. After 4 months of being shod in the Natural balance method he was completely sound. He has remained sound from that time forward. He was a favorite of Mark and his students and they have followed his progress.
I have found Parelli to be a real joy to work with. He is beautifully trained western, being incredibly responsive to seat and leg. He has been ridden in western and English tack and prefers bitless bridles in both. He is level headed on the trail and is always the first to spot game- he is alert but not spooky. He loads (almost by himself), clips, bathes (even his face), blankets and is eager to be caught in a field. He is not herd bound and will leave a pasture mate willingly even if they throw a fit. His only vice is he is difficult to shoe, I would guess from being sore for years. He is not malicious- just restless and stressed. A calm, patient farrier is a must!
I am looking for a forever home with someone who will love him and use him for a pleasure/trail horse. He does require Natural Balance shoeing to remain sound and it is a requirement of his adoption. He is safe for an advanced beginner, although he is calmer/quieter on the trail than in an arena where he can be hotter- although still completely under control. This is an exceptional horse and someone will be getting a horse of a lifetime.
