The current theory is he sprained his ankle yesterday running and sliding like a maniac. He was mad because I was ponying Shelby off of Tanager, just on the other side of the fence line, and he was powerless to stop it. He was perfectly sound later when I longed and rode him, but was lame in the morning. The vet was not able to palpate much because of the swelling, and Desi was extremely uncooperative and almost got himself fired from the vet (he's not making friends in the equine service industry around here). But he finally let me poultice and wrap it, and hopefully he'll let the vet get a better look when the swelling goes down. I'm convinced I have angered the gods. When I went down to check on everyone just now, I found my mare Jazz dead lame in her right front. It looks like an abscess. I had no energy to soak so I just poulticed and wrapped it. I repent! I repent! Anyway, he looks innocent enough, doesn't he?

He is just something else...he looks like he is about to fall asleep after such a big day. Sure makes you wonder what happened to him (other than complete starvation) in his life that made him the poster child for TB Moments all wrapped up in one chestnut burrito. Sweet sweet boy. He's so lucky to have found you Holly. I'm still his number 1 fan!!!

Aww....thanks. We need more allies like you. Desi is indeed a sweet boy.
It can be disheartening to be told over and over "he is not worth it" when I know that he is, or that he at least deserves a chance. His last farrier smacked him around and scared the shit out of him. His new farrier is awesome. She spent time getting acquainted with him and let him thoroughly inspect her. She is patient and quiet, so he lets her do his hinds.
The vet at least has some ideas for me. There is a new pill form of Dormosedan coming out, and I'm first on the list when she gets it. Also she thinks I should get in the habit of twitching him before the vet arrives. The twitch does quiet him.

Ahh, the joys of thoroughbred ownership. He is so lucky to have you. If it makes you feel better, Lady has also been fired by several farriers and a trainer!

...His last farrier smacked him around and scared the shit out of him. Yikes! I'm assuming this is uncommon, this "smacking around" by a farrier?

Sadly not uncommon when you have a horse that won't stand still! Farriers don't want to get hurt. If they get hurt, they can't bring home a paycheck. A kicking, lurching, freaked out horse puts them at high risk, given the fact that they are hunched down beneath the 1200 lb animal. Most farriers in my area don't have the time or desire to deal with a nervous, resentful horse. Usually the horse gets smacked a good one, or the farrier simply refuses to shoe the horse. I can understand the mentality - and some horses will behave after a good whack - but that is not how I want my horse treated! It just makes them more scared during future shoeings - and I'm sure this is what happened to poor Desi - a farrier lost his patience and gave him a bad experience I have only found one farrier that has always been calm, patient, and appropriately firm with Lady. I pay way too much for her shoes - but I wouldn't trade her piece of mind for anything! I told myself the other day, if I spent as much on shoes as Lady does, why I could have a closet filled with Manolo Blahniks!!!!

This was a farrier I didn't really need anyway. Charged way too much and thought way too highly of himself.
The first whack came the day Desi started erupting with a fresh case of scratches, after a WNV vaccine. Farrier went to reach for the sore left hind to trim, and Desi picked up the other hind. Farrier smacked him for that. The relationship just deteriorated from there.
Next visit he attempted to shoe his hinds and did the same thing happened. Desi picked up the wrong foot and got whacked. When he went to drive a nail, Desi pulled his foot away. Farrier completely blew his top and hit him again. Desi was trying to get away from the mean man at his butt and pushed into me.
The mean man said the horse didn't respect me because he "ran me over." (Well, you were back there smacking on his ass. What did you expect?) He then proclaimed the only way to shoe his hinds would be at the vet's, under sedation...oh, yeah, right. Ha ha.
It was very satisfying to call him up and say: "I just wanted to let you know I had someone come out and shoe the hinds on that horse that was giving you so much trouble last week. She had no problems, and the two of them got along well, so I'll be using her again. Thanks for the work you have done. I will not be needing your services any more." ;D
The new lady loves Thoroughbreds, and knows better than to hit them. Oh, and the best part is she has very reasonable rates, a bit under average for this area. So I tip her well.
As for the bum leg, the swelling is down today so I am hopeful that this is just another minor ding he is overreacting to.

Poor Desi!!!
I have to say that I could not be happier with my farrier (Daphne Jones - who also is doing all the trims on the King and Snoco seizures) - she is the most patient person ever. In fact, if I ever get hit by that bus - I think I will have to will Chewy to her - he absolutely adores her. He is so fascinated with her that he cannot take his eyes off her and his ears are up and he just nibbles and gives her kisses throughout the whole session. I could almost get jealous if it wasn't so comical. He loves to listen to her constant patter (she talks to him constantly). And she is so so gentle with Redmond and let's him know that she understands his pain and that it's hard for him to stand on his bad leg in order to do his good leg and gives him lots and lots of breaks. Just love her to death! Very fortunate to have her.

There should be an event in the Olympics called shoer tossing! My TB would win a gold for sure. I found the most awesome shoer but he won't come out to my neck of the woods so I have to haul my horses an hour and pay an ungodly amount of money for pads on all fours but it is worth it to have my horses shod in an hour (instead of three and have to come back to finish the right hind demon leg) and they're yawnin by the time he's done! The crazy things we do for our beloved horses!
