It does sound like EPM or something related. Poor guy. Glad SAFE will be able to help him.

Yes I appreciate safe so much. With out them I dont think Caddy would have had the tiniest chance. I am hoping the vet can help. All i want is for him to be happy. Also I have decided to look into getting his tattoo read so that I can look up his racing history. I feel that if he does need to be put down he should at least be known. So When i get the money and the information I will let everyone know what this amazing gentle giant did in his life and who he was known as. thanks for all the support I could not have done all this without all of you. thank you Kristi

Hi all - just a quick update on Cadillac. Dr. Hannah saw him today. He was a little more bright and walking a little better but his BCS is about a 1, so he is very, very thin. Heart rate and temp was normal, so he doesn't appear to be in any significant pain. However, his gum color was very poor and he was dehydrated. His teeth are worn due to being a cribber, but not in bad shape and while due for a float that is not the cause of his weight loss. She believes he is much older than 9 - probably more like mid-20s. Dr. Hannah felt that we should take bloodwork before deciding on what the next step is for Cadillac. She is strongly suspicious of kidney failure, but the bloodwork will confirm that. We should have the bloodwork back in the next 1-2 days.

Wow, mid-20s compared to 9. That's a HUGE difference. Being older could help explain his difficulty over the winter, as well as the kidney failure. My fingers are crossed for him to make it though!

Wow, sure is a big difference in age. I hope he is able to make it through.

Yes we are hoping that too. We were also extremely shocked to find he is more likely in his 20s. We always thought he was an extremely calm and well mannered TB. Now it makes more sense that he is in his 20s. Thanks for all who are pulling for caddy we love him dearly. keep those prayers strong!

Hi everyone - sorry for the lack of updates. Cadillac's bloodwork showed that his kidney function was ok, but that he has a massive internal infection. Dr. Hannah thought perhaps Bastard strangles, although he has no outward signs of it. The infection could be walled off however in his abdomen. Treatment would require a trip to Pilchuck for an ultrasound to find the infection, painful antibiotic injections, and possibly surgery, with no guarantee that he would survive. Because it has gone on a long time and he is in such poor condition, as well as the fact that he is so much older and also having neurological issues, the decision was made by his owner, Dr. Hannah, and SAFE to put Caddy down. He will be laid to rest tomorrow evening at 7pm. I have some photos to post, but would like permission from eternityrider to post them. Thank you to everyone who rallied for this guy...its tough when we can't save them, but at the same time, sometimes giving them a peaceful death is the best thing we can do for them. Please wish Cadillac a peaceful passing over the Rainbow Bridge.

Thanks for the update. This is so sad, especially because it sounds like the owner was trying to take care of him and do the right thing, just couldn't find out what was wrong. He will be in a better place tomorrow night.

My most sincere condolences to Eternityrider - doing what was best for him turned out to be a very different thing than what you thought it would be, but it was still the best for him. Thank you for loving this horse and sending him on his way. Also, a big round of hugs to Dr. Hannah - doctor or not, it's never easy to put a horse down. You know it's hard for her too.. Rest in peace Cadillac.

That is to bad.
Sometimes the best thing is the hardest thing. Atleast his owner - Eternityrider- loves him enough to do the right thing. My deepest condolences to you.

Kristi, I'm so sorry. You did everything you could for Cadillac and that turned out to be quite a lot. He knows how much you love him. My heart goes out to both of you. Jo
