So I know this is a little premature, since I dont get him till Saturday (9-9-06) but I am just too excited. He is a 20 something yr old unkown breed bay gelding. He was a used up ranch horse that Khemostar Arabians picked up at a slaughter auction. I bought him and am picking him up next Saturday. She was consigning him to another sale last tuesday if I hadnt of said i wanted him for sure. so she saved him, just to prolong his wait for slaughter... until i grabbed him... When I bring him home, ill get some recent photos of him at his new home

I see why you're excited - he's a handsome guy! The old ranch horses are so well-trained and are just great. Congrats!

Oh my...lots of sad pictures today. Asmo, you are doing a good thing, taking this guy in. Looks like that leg may need a vet. Did that just happen in the trailer? Poor guy.

What happened to him? I've seen pics of him on her site and he didn't look like this! Though the sunken temples are a usually a sign of age. My 35+ year old gelding has those even when the rest of him is all muscled up. But that leg is bad. He did not look near this skinny either. What happened?

I have no idea... He has been in 3 different peoples trailers today. He has had a VERY long trip. He was from Ferndale, WA and is now in La Grande, OR it is about 6 1/2 to 7hours. Plus the trade offs. He was with his last owner until snoquamalie pass, she stuck 5 horses in a 4 horse (took the dividers out), and the stupid Arab mare he was next to kicked the crap outa him. He wont put any weight on it when he's standing. Its not broken and it doesnt need stitches but his vet app. is Monday at 10:00 am he gets in WNV shot, and a good lookover by my well intrusted vet. He is a gentle soul this guy. I cant believe after giving his life away to a ranch, they just sent him to the canner. Me and the second gal traded off at the Wal-Mart in Kennewick. She was very nice and had him and the arab she bought seperated (stock trailer so that big divider) he was calm but scared. if that makes since.

Okay so stupid trailering may contribute to him getting the snot tramped out of him, but the skinniness... I just don't get why some people reward loyalty in this manner. It amazes me... I would try to get the vet out a bit sooner if possible (though I am well aware of the difficulties that arise trying to do so).

Because of lack of donations, I cant afford a $80 emergency farm call fee to get him out tomarrow. So monday is a soon as I can get him in. Ill just keep hosing it off and putting shrieners on it (love that stuff) I will also give him a little banamine to help the swelling.

Maybe soak some old towels in cold cold water and then wrap them around the leg? We had to do that to a mare after she fell and hurt her leg (she turned into a wild woman when we tried to hose her) and it ended up working really really well, took the swelling down real fast. The cold was more direct and could cover all sides...

Thanks for the tip. Yah, get this, I went to hose his leg for about 15 mins and at first he looked at the hose and moved his but sideways a bit, but then i flung the lead over his neck, and he literally parked it and fell asleep the WHOLE TIME. He ground ties apparantly wonderful, and he walked right into my trailer no balking at all. he is really a sweet boy.

Sounds like my old man, he fell asleep during his last farrier visit... I hope Roy heals up quick. I still can't understand how he got so thin...

i dunno. He was out with a bunch of other horses, maybe he was the bottom of the pecking order. I really dont know, but she never forewarned me about his weight, only his leg... >|

She's had him for a few weeks now and the photos on her site don't... well he doesn't appear to be that skinny nor did his leg look that bad... The older guys usually are at the bottom of the pecking order, they just don't seem to want to fight back, only to please. Well, however it happened, I hope he heals up quickly.
