So, I've now worked Trey twice with a surcingle and side reins. I still desperately need a shorter girth - I was wrong, the one we were using before was a 48" so something like a 42" would probably work. However, we are working on lunging and he is a FAST learner, and very willing. I lunged him over trot poles a week ago and he was very willing and trotted right over them without hesitation. Tonight we made a little 8" jump or so by just putting a pole up on one side on a stepping stool and not only did he not refuse once, jump right over it with enthusiasm, but he consistently picked the high side to jump and cleared it with a fair amount of room to spare. He really appeared to be having fun and was SO CUTE! Next time I will get video and pictures.
Afterwards I had a pony ride! Literally, that is...as Allison led me around bareback. Neither one of us was feeling brave enough to ride him solo bareback, but I got a chance to feel what he is like and he was super good, although I am sure it felt different to him being able to feel my legs around him. What fun he was! (and, reassuringly close to the ground in case he did decide to have a green horse moment!)
The other thing we are dealing with is ear plaque, which started bothering him a few weeks ago with Monica and the flies have been biting him and are attracted to it so he is very sensitive in his ears, to the point of being difficult to halter or bridle. Hannah looked at it and she said that ear plaque, while it doesn't go away, usually doesn't bother him so the key now is just keeping the flies away. I went out and bought him a fly mask with ears (and it took 20 minutes to put it on, so now its STAYING on!). This is helping a lot, as whatever is going on in his ears is a huge attraction to no-see-ums and they were swarming his ears tonight at dusk. Hopefully now that he has protection they will stop bothering him soon. He is already much improved about being haltered and he has only been wearing the mask a few days now.
I just LOVE this pony. He is the sweetest thing, and will follow you everywhere. He loves people, loves attention, and really wants to please. Someone is going to get the pony of the lifetime with this little guy!

I broke down and bought a smaller girth tonight to use with Allison's hunt saddle, and then I got to ride him! I lunged him a bit first, and also over a small jump (Allison got a couple of photos, but it was dark, so they didn't turn out well). Then I got on. We had kind of a rocky start, since Allison was holding him for me while I mounted and he ended up taking a step forward right onto her foot - ouch! Allison yelled and Trey's head went up and he went flying backward and then bolted, but I wasn't quite all the way on yet. I ended up with his nose hitting my chest but he is so little, even though I didn't have my stirrups I just kind of wrapped my legs around him and managed to get him under control. Poor Allison has a bruised foot though. Anyway, he was super! What a fun little ride he is! Not too much of a pony trot, really, he has nice rhythm. His steering is still a little iffy and I worked a bit on getting him to move away from the leg a bit - baby leg yields and basic bending on a circle. He is really smart and also goes quite naturally on the bit. Next time we will get some photos - it was too dark for any riding photos.

My foot still hurts, but here I am back in my heels at work. Gotta love the light horses, no broken bones He isn't spooky, just sensitive; and I am sure me yelling "ouch!" didn't help. And so cute popping over the little cross-rail!! He would be a cute little pony club mount.

He is adorable, and clearly thinks that little jump is too easy. We need some connections with Pony Club...I can totally see him doing that!

Allison and I worked with Trey today. We lunged him a bit over trot poles first. He had a bit of trouble figuring out that he was supposed to trot through them and not jump them, and we had to back off to just two poles until he figured that out. We'll need to work on this. Allison hopped on first and I took a few pictures. Trey was being a little bit balky and then I got on him and he was trying to test the boundaries a bit. Just wanting to go where he wanted to go at the speed he wanted to go and basically just stopping and refusing to move. So, it was make him step to the left, step to the right, step to the left, step to the right, until he was unstuck. Once he worked through that he was good. He also prefers not having a lot of contact on his mouth - so we will need some work on getting him to accept some contact if he wants to be an english pony. Showing off his thick, bee-yoo-tee-ful tail: All done! Good boy...

He will be great with more miles. He really is sweet and tries hard, just greeen. Then the pony-attitude came out, only briefly though. I think he would even work for a small adult rider (hahahaha, Jaime )
