TREY - 2 year old gelding, chestnut; two back socks, white blaze. He is shy and still a little unsure about people, but his foster parents have been patiently working with him and are making great progess with him. He'll run away when he's unsure of things, but he does not act mean or studdy, he's actually a pretty quiet steady little guy. Trey is halter-broken and is doing very well. He is very curious, sweet and willing, and would make a great project, maybe for someone in 4-H, or, with his build and movement, a nice child's hunter pony. He does have a small (1cm) hernia but the vet does not feel it is any concern and does not require surgical repair. Currently in foster care in Monroe, WA. $400 Contact Jaime at SAFE for more information: jaime@safehorses.org

I was reading that they've scheduled the gelding procedure. I hope that goes well. It's always been my least favorite part about bringing home babies. It seems to be harder on me than it is on them, though.

I agree LDH.....I had never had to have one gelded before until my colt Whiskey. I wish the vet had prepared me more about what they were going to do to him. I was way more tramatized than he was I think!!

Update and new photos from foster mom: Trey is going to be gelded on Nov. 16th, get his shots and wormed for the winter, and will have the vet check out his hernia. The hernia is not getting bigger. Hey everyone Trey is sooooooo sweet, my daughter in law had him out last weekend on a lead rope and walked him around our yard out of his exercise pen and stall. He's so proud of himself. He comes up to us now and greets us, doesn't run away from us when we open the stall door, it's like ok ok where's the treats I'm ready...... Why are people so anxious to get the other yearlings at the feedlot who are from wild stock and not check into this yearling? Those guys aren't gelded and not halter broke, some not even been around people. People you are missing out getting to work with this little guy, getting him to trust you, ;-) Trey will make some one a very loyal horse !~! Hope I'm not sounding harsh here but again such a sweet sweet boy. Juls

According to Juls, the gelding went smoothly yesterday and he appears to be recovering nicely today. Good to know it's not slowing him down.

Update from the CBER BB
Re: TREY - yearling chestnut colt « Reply #24 on Today at 5:22am »
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It's been 3 weeks since Trey was gelded and he 's doing just fine. He and my Sadie are the same size and they have pal'd up and become friends. Even eat their oats out of the same pan! At first she chased Trey away so we gave them each a pan of their own which worked but Sadie still made him work for his oats, tried to size him up and steal them, but now they're buds! Trey is just a lover, still a little spooky when it comes to some things but usually it's cause the noise startled him but he's a good boy gentle boy. And he did ok for the vet too when he got his shots and our vet thought he was a very handsome boy.

I don't have any new updates to report other than he is doing well. I don't think he will be very tall as his mother was pony-sized. Probably 14-14.2h. Mother was indeed a black/white pinto, we don't know who his sire was.

Trey is coming 2 this year and probably should not actually be started for another year but this summer would be a good time to start teaching him about wearing a saddle, bridle, etc. plus all the things that grown up horses have to know like clippers, baths, etc.

And updated comments about Trey from Juls:
"He hasn’t changed much in size since I put the pictures on the Web page way back in September or October.
He kept his weight from this winter doing good he’s not over weight but, their winter coats are starting to shed, I was out walking him today, brushing him, giving him treats, etc.
One of the pics with the head shots has Sadie in it one of his pasture pals. He shares the pasture with Sadie and Cameo both girls are his age and size so he’s not out with bigger horses or any one that picks on smaller guys, except for Sadie she’s the boss of the three.
Having him on the lead rope today he did fine, but he wanted to dance a lot I think that was due because he was out and it was such a beautiful day and it was exciting for him to be out walking and just being away from the girls. I had him tied up to my bar out in the back yard and brushed him down, he just loved it. A couple of my cats were out “helping†and he wasn’t concerned at all plus he could hear my dogs barking too from their run. He’s used to dogs coming out to the pasture when it is feeding time but my dogs are used to the horses too and they do not chase them. So he’s used to them also.
I am not an experienced horse person like some of you gals are, I really do like working with the younger horses to help build their confidence up with humans, I’ve just used the techniques I’ve learned in training my dogs for the show ring and for obedience being gentle and kind my goal with any dog is to teach them to be a good companion or working dog same as any horse should be.
Whoever gets Trey will not be disappointed he’s sweet, and trusting and ready and willing for his new owner."

I know Juls is fostering another CBER horse, I'm not sure which one though.
