So cute!
I wish we could find some history on the brand...I bet that old boy has a story to tell!

I found his brand, or one extremely close to it, in BC expired brand book. Or actually PDF online. I am so happy for him!

When I got home last night, I noticed JR hadn't eaten all his hay. I thought, well that's weird, he normally cleans it up. I went about my barn chores, and then doing my daily lookover on the critters that's when I noticed JR has a swollen right front leg. It is swollen up to his lower part of his knee. Not sure how this happened, and hoping it is just an abcess, but Dr. Hannah will be over today to check it out. Poor guy.

Thanks, shekaberry. Dr. Hannah left a little bit ago, and it appears that JR got a good kick to his upper part of his right leg, fortunately where more of the muscle area is and we didn't notice any open wound at all. JR and one of the other geldings are very studdy acting to each other, they are seperate as they DO NOT get along with each other, and get into over the fence daily, but if he is not part of the hang out group, JR calls for him and he comes running...weird! Anyway, they must have got into it when the hot fence was off and with JR being not a quick mover took the blow. I did a furazone wrap on it last night as it was just the lower part of his leg that was swollen at that time, but by the time Hannah got here, it was all the way up his leg to the front of his chest. So, we will be doing lots of cold hosing, stack wrapping, and giving bute. Poor guy.

JR is much, much better today. Did the triple standing wrap that Dr. Hannah suggested, and he could almost walk normal on it, and you could tell he was a lot more comfortable-thankfully! I had to use my friends pink w/purple heart bandage wrap (sorry JR), to keep the bandages in place. He was a very good boy for it all, and I even got a loud knicker this morning at feeding time, normally, his nose just moves, and you can sort of hear him talking...too cute!

It's been a long while since I have sent any updates on JR. He is doing wonderfully...his weight is great, I take his blanket off 1x per week to make sure we are maintaining, his feet are solid, he's eating well, and he also gets the luxury of having a nicely bedded stall at night... ;D I originally had Raina and my other ol'man Storme in the stalls, but realized that Raina was much happier and SANE living outside 24/7 in her shelter paddock space. She was progressively getting more TBredy by the day. So, the two grumpy old men have the stalls...and it is super sweet seeing them first thing in the morning hanging out waiting for their morning mashes and hay...here's a pic that was taken about a month ago...I love it when he has the happy look on his face.

I just read this entire thread for the first time -- my good friend JodyCat (who was the one that directed me to your forum) alerted me to the thread. I cannot say enough about how this horse was handled by all of you and how stunning a transformation he made! You all are just inspiring -- and just what the doctor ordered! My friend referred me to your forum when I had reached a point on another more political forum of being so incredibly discouraged and disillusioned. For the past two years, I've been working on the issue of getting federal legislation passed to ban the slaughter and transportation for slaughter of American horses. It's been a discouraging road, to say the least. I really needed a reality check and to see what it's really all about. Your organization and site (and JR!) have shown me that. And I'm so grateful. You all are walking the walk -- not just talking the talk. I hope someday I can make a contribution to your organization as a volunteer (I am a monthly sponsor for one of your horses, but I'd like to do more). I've got a long way to go when it comes to hands-on experience with horses. I was around them a lot as a child -- took lessons as a teen. But then somehow life took over and horses, sadly, weren't a part of my life other than my constant yearning to be around them. I've started weekly riding and horsemanship lessons this year (a wonderful Christmas gift from my husband). My husband and I recently purchased a nice 1.4 acre level lot and we are breaking ground on our small home this weekend. My dream of all dreams is to have a rescue horse there someday. I'm hoping for a horse like JR -- one who will have a tough time finding a home anywhere -- one who is at great risk. That's my dream horse. One that maybe most people would overlook, but we all know is so special (as they all are!)
Okay, enough already. I just wanted to thank you all. And I'd LOVE to keep hearing updates on how JR is doing! If only every neglected horse could have a happy ending like this.

Beth-
You are a welcome addition and have already been a wonderful contributor of both sponsorship and encouragement/enthusiasm to others here. Thank you and welcome aboard!

My sweet JR almost gave his momma a heart attack today!! I looked outside and saw what appeared to be him resting...well, I've never seen him actually lay down resting flat on his side...I know he rolls because he comes in every night beautifully covered with dirt, so the first thing that came to my mind was, hmm, that's different, I better go check on him. I got my boots on as quickly as I could, and jetted out thinking that he would hear me approach and sit up or I would see an ear flicker, something...still no movement! I was about 10 feet away, talking to him, still no movement, his eyes looked glazed over, and I started panicking...it took to after I opened the gate to his paddock and stood right by him did he jump up like he was 2 years old...never seen this horse move so fast, but I scared him, and he scared me....I felt so relieved that I started crying, but then felt so guilty that I woke him up from such a deep sleep, which I have never seen him do...the little stinker.

FINALLY, getting around to posting about JR's adventure with the sweetest little horse crazy girl named Bella! It was a very cold day, but Bella could care less. She was so excited to actually be around a real horse. She colored me the sweetest My Little Pony picture, which I have hanging up in my office. She had no fear, and really I think enjoyed grooming JR and giving him carrots and kisses more than riding...Bella's mom and dad sent me some pictures, and now I have them to share... edited to add: I guess Bella has a stuffed animal horse at home, and has officially named him JR...too cute!! ;D This is one of my favorites. And we're off: Happy girl, and JR saying, I'm a good boy, do you have a treat for me?? Yay, treat time!! Sweet kisses... I hope they come out again soon. It was so fun! JR is such a good boy for the little ones... My son, Micah will be adventuring out with JR next month to do a leadline class at a local schooling show...he's quite excited about it, and actually has taken to jogging JR, not on his own, but with mom leading him...JR's got the perfect jog for any little one to learn on...more pics to come next month with JR all dazzled up...
