I was planning on assessing Wishes under saddle yesterday, but I have had a growing suspicion with her and after taking her out yesterday and really looking at her, I am opting not to ride her just yet. We gave her a bath instead and then took some pictures and a short video clip. You tell me what you see... From the side: And from the rear: Video clip coming shortly....

Oh crap. I didn't know there were studs where she came from. Please tell me Whisper doesn't have the same concern

Whisper did not have any studs with her, but Wishes had two Appaloosa stallions with her.

Yikes, is it time for a preg check? Or are you fairly certain she is bred? Has anyone seen her come into heat this year? If not, she is probably in foal.

She was ultrasounded not long after we got her and Dr. Hannah saw a lot of fluid in her uterus but no pregnancy. She has had a couple of times where she appeared to be in heat. So, I would have thought for sure no, but her body says yes. I'm going to have Dr. Hannah recheck her.

Well, we will just keep our fingers crossed she is just FAT. If she has been livin' the good life for the last few months she just might look pregnant. People think Dream is pregnant all the time, but she is just a little porky, LOL!

But see in the 3rd and 4th picture down, how her belly is all to the left? Then look at the video clip, taken right after the pictures, and note that her belly is hanging all to the right. Does fat do that??

OK, well I have to say this. Appaloosas are a long time favorite breed of mine. And since I have been helping SAFE out for the last 3 years, thoroughbreds have grown on me quite a bit also. That truly doesn't mean that it had ever even crossed my mind to breed them together though. Hopefully she's just fat and her fat moves

Have you seen anything kicking in there? I could always see Dancer kicking inside Teddie after she ate her grain. Or sometimes after she had a drink of cold water. No, fat does not usually switch sides, it just stays in one place, (unfortunatly.) I did not look at the video clip yet. Have there been any changes in her udder?

When I first got Coconut and we were trying to figure out if she was pregnant or not, I was told that the belly of the pregnant mare is typically uneven on the sides. Evenly round = probably just fat Unevenly round/or angular protrusion = possibly pregnant Coconut was unusually round....the vet said it was probably grass fat (now we're sure it was parasite overload!) and that it would probably go down with better nutrition. 4 months later I still had a mare with a big belly so I made him palp her...he pronounced her not-pregnant and gave me the OK to step up her workouts. I'm ashamed to admit that she...once again...has a belly that needs a work out I'm glad, however, that you're going to hold off riding/training for a bit to get the question answered.

I thought I saw things moving in there, but your mind can convince you of anything if you look hard enough. But the belly was clearly moving from one side to the other, Kelly (Sunday volunteer) and I clearly saw that multiple times. No change in her udder.

She does not look pregnant to me but I certainly know of cases where an ultrasound was wrong. Has she come into heat this year? It's May, she should be cycling and most TB mares will definitely let you know when they are in heat, ha ha.
BTW kudos to her rehabber...she looks wonderful!

Wishes was palpated today by Dr. Hannah and she couldn't feel a baby.....we will continue to keep an eye on her and if she still looks suspicious in a month we will ultrasound her but it looks she may just have a broodmare belly but thankfully, no baby.
