Well if this helps. Back in 2001 when I first started working at the barn I'm now leasing, the Arabian mare Mariah (who was 19 at the time) had the same back and same bulge as this TB mare. Almost identical. If I can find a scanner, I'll see if I can scan it. Back then I still rode her and then one day she just stopped and was in pain. I got off and pulled the saddle off and both her owner and myself also thought she was pregnant. Vet came out and sure enough, nothing. Next spring came, nothing.
Every year since then the sway in her back has gotten deeper and the bulge has gotten wider. We had a vet come out after and he mentioned that her back muscles were really tight and he believed that since she was never trained to collect, that she rode with a hollow back all her life causing her to loose support which is why this was happening to her.
But I tell ya. It's identical.

Hopefully its just a case of being "pleasantly plump" after being "extremely emaciated". She is a cute mare and very sweet, but has earned a reprieve from birthing babies.

Since we have been unsuccessful in finding a sucker volunteer willing to be the guinea pig and get on Wishes, we have decided to send her off to Andrea next month for a 30-day refresher. I am sure she is broke, but I am also equally sure that she has some issues under saddle that will need to be worked out. Her temperment is interesting - she is a total sweetheart on the ground and easy and willing to do most anything with, but to things she doesn't like (like messing with her ears, or lunging), she is prone to having BIG overreactions to. It's that side of her that makes it so no one (including me) is all that inclined to get on her right now.
On a more positive note she does not look to have gotten any bigger in the belly (although she still looks big), and I no longer think she is pregnant!

Because I didn't want to jinx myself, I've waited to post this... Yesterday while Daphne & Valerie were out they practically dared me to put a fly mask on Wishes. I won't say the execution was flawless but I was able to get it on her fairly easy. Later that evening I went to remove everyone's mask and she helped remove hers little more urgently that I would have prefered but this morning when I went to re-mask everyone she gave me a little bit of a head toss at first but then allowed me to put it on... I'm calling it success!!! I used the mask with the velcro both underneath and behind the ears so we didn't actually have to go over the ears but once I had the mask on, she let me rub her forehead and eventually seemed pretty calm about touching her ears. Hopefully she's learning it's all in her best interest. If I get to it, I'll take a photo before I leave the farm today ... just incase anyone wants to check it out after they've picked themselves up off the floor update: had to get on the road so no photos...but lots of witnesses!!

Well Wishes has gone up to Half Trak Farm for what hopefully ends up being just a month "tune-up". I can't wait to hear how she does under saddle!

First update on Wishes:
She had her "beauty day" today. She was VERY good...she tried her "I don't want to" flying backwards trick one time when being led into the barn, got backed down the lane, and then was perfect after that. Our farrier looked at her poor flat feet and she had some significant bruising on her soles so we put front shoes on her, and she may end up needing back shoes as well, as her feet still have a long way to go from the mess they were when she came. She was great for the shoer though. She got her mane pulled, so she now looks like a TB should, and she even was great for clipping and got her bridle path and whiskers cleaned up.
Tomorrow she will start work!

Just checking in to beg for update whenever you get one. I can't wait to see this girl going under saddle (and also find out what her issues are). Of course, she'll probably have to "show you" and be absolutely perfect at the trainers.

Wishes was tacked up and lunged yesterday with no problems whatsoever. Andrea was even able to get the bridle on her WITHOUT taking it apart! She actually pulled it over her ears! It took a little bit of work and lots of treats but she did it...great to see that she is improving about her ear-shyness and hopefully we can get her over it. She was totally fine on the lunge line, in side reins and without, and didn't try her backwards trick once. They will be getting on her next week after they get back from the show.

Wishes is doing great! She's been ridden twice now at both the walk and trot with no drama at all. She's being very sweet and willing and Andrea really likes her and thinks she'll make a nice amateur's horse. She's also been a piece of cake to bridle. Good girl!

Well thats awesome! We don't have property, but we are looking for a place to board, because we are looking to get a horse. Would SAFE allow us to adopt a horse and board it? I know some rescues don't, but its worth a shot at asking : ] I plan on boarding at a place where I can just take the bus home from school and go straight to the stable.
