The last two work parties have been very successful but there's still quite a bit to do so we're adding one more work party day on
SUNDAY - September 27th 10am - ??
27706 Old Owen Road Monroe WA 98272
As with the other work parties, please bring metal rakes for spreading gravel. Jaime can add any additional tools that might be needed.
Please PM me, post here or email me at: volunteer@safehorses.org if you can join us. The more we people we have, the more we can accomplish!

Mark me down as a definite maybe! I was bummed I missed today but dh ran a 5k then hung out in the beer garden longer than anticipated and with all the commotion etc I figured it would NOT be a good idea to have my 11y/o with me. Next sunday is pretty open at this point though! MTA- Kerstin doesn't check the board often but mentioned she was planning to be there next sunday too.

I am going to try!! My husband comes back from the East Coast tomorrow, so I'm hoping he will think a work party sounds like a good idea. I'm going to try to tempt him with power tools, remind him that Cedar lives there and tell he can bring carrots.

Well we worked really hard today and many thanks to everyone who came today! We managed to:
- Get all the gravel done! - Get all the posts in! - Cut all the fence boards to size (except where we had a couple of openings that ended up bigger than 8 feet and we will have to go buy some extra 10 foot boards for those) - Apply sealant to the last shelter - Cut feeder doors for the two new shelters - Hang two gates - Put up fence boards on 1/2 paddock - Put up electric wire/hot tape brackets on 1 paddock - Spread some grass seed - Put the blanket tubs away
Unfortunately, we did not finish and right now the paddocks are still not usable. We were really trying to get them done before it starts raining tomorrow but that doesn't look like its going to happen. We still need to:
- Finish putting up all the fence boards on the perimeter fencing (plus one extra side as we had extra rails so we are doing one complete paddock in rails). - Put up the rest of the hot wire/hot tape brackets and string it - Hang 3 remaining gates - Put down stall mats in last two shelters - Add hinges/handles to feeder doors - A few extra things like fill in some gaps, cut tops of fence posts level, etc. - Put up gutters and flashing, and attach gutters to drain tubing
When it is ALL done, we will have two new 12x12 shelters in addition to the 6 we already had. We will also have put down a lot more gravel and this year we put drain rock underneath the existing gravel base for improved drainage. We re-routed all the arena and shelter run-off away from the shelter area. We extended out the existing paddocks by 16 feet plus added a 6-foot walkway around the perimeter for bringing horses in and out and for moving wheelbarrows through. We will have replaced all the tposts with permanent wood posts with all the gates, ends and corners in cement. We will have replaced all hot-tape gates with real metal gates, and all perimeter fencing will be wood with a strand of hot wire on the top to keep the horses from leaning on it.
It will be a HUGE improvement over last year! Unfortunately it looks like the horses will have to get wet before it gets finished (I am sure they will live and probably hurts me more than it hurts them), but we are getting there and maybe by NEXT weekend we can get it done.
I am going to talk to Jet though about possibly postponing the Adoption Event, as getting these shelters ready really needs to take precedence.

And one more...this one should be titled "How many people does it take to nail on a fence board?" (the answer is four, apparantly! Don't laugh though, it was a lot harder than it looks!)

Wow! You got a lot done after we left! It's looking good, but you're right, still lots to do! Sorry we had to go! Got to our barn and had to dig post holes there too since Denali decided to try and kill the horse next to her. Sigh. Keep us updated on when we're going to work again!!

Wow, it looks like you got a lot of work done! Any possibility that the next work party could be on Saturday? We would love to come up and help.

Jenny - you are more than welcome to, but don't feel like you have to! I know it is a long drive for you.
And Wendy yes, we will do the next one on Saturday. Unfortunately I don't think we will have weather like we did yesterday next Saturday....
