We learned with Frankie that orphans are particularly susceptible to worms and normal deworming isn't enough...we actually had to deworm him every 2 weeks to clean out his system. So if he is the one who lost his mother, that could also contribute to the severity of the problem (and of course his debilitated state in general).
He looks a lot better already!

That is by far one of the grossest things I have ever seen... and those scabs! These horses are survivors... I can't wait to see him all better and this time just a distant memory!

This is going to sound ignorant, but I had no idea they even got that big. I've only seen worms that are **maybe** three inches long. That is disgusting!

Oh, my God. I have had and been around horses all of my life. I have heard of worms like that, but I have never seen them. That poor little boy. No wonder he wasn't feeling well. I sure hope there is a special place in Hell for people who abuse babies like that. pam

I too have been around horses almost all my life and have NEVER seen anything like that. Good Lord, that is so nauseating. To think of those in their body. I wonder if they could feel them moving around. The worse thing I ever saw that delt with pasasites, was when the neighbor squeezed bot worms out of a horses neck once. That was gross too.

Tanner had gynormous amounts of huge roundworms come out when I first started deworming him as well. I don't usually get grossed out, but the massive quantity of worms was absolutely disgusting. It took about 8 months of deworming before they finally all went away. YUCK. The good news is that there doesn't seem to be any lasting damage. He is a total air fern.
I'm sure the babies will start feeling better now that they've got a few less "friends" living inside of them.

Kokomo got his feet trimmed today. I worked with him a bit yesterday on picking up his feet and he was surprisingly very good for me. He trusts still very individually though and today he wasn't so sure he wanted Daphne, our farrier, to just grab his foot so I reminded him of what we had done the day before and after that he was so good for her. For being as unhandled as he is, he did so well! I was very proud of him. Some before photos: Hole in toe found while trimming: After:

Glad these little ones are still progressing. The first worms are always scarey. I rescued a mare out of a swamp and every time I wormed her she would colic. Finally, got the worms under control and she did great. The rain rot will heal in time, getting rid of the lice is a good thing too. I love that you are taking so many pictures. Do you keep a file on each horse? Or maybe a photo album of before and after pix. Thanks for sharing your progress! If you need help, just call me.

I know I'm silly around the babies, but those freshly trimmed little feet are so cute, I love how cute they look right after trims...

Well Kokomo is a completely different horse than when he first came. He has latched on to me as his personal savior and he will follow me everywhere. I just love him! He is now pretty social with new people as well, so he is getting over his shyness. He does have a new name though, and that is Studdy Buddy. Yes, its true, Kokomo has discovered his inner stallion and decided that girls do not have cooties but are in fact pretty cute. He'll be first on the list to have brain surgery as soon as he gets his weight up in a month or two.
