Just wanted to check in and give an update on Dobbins. He is doing very well, however he is starting to show visual signs of stiffness again. I am increasing his joint supplement and we will continue enjoying his company until he finds his home. He really is such a wonderful guy he will make someone the best companion ever.

I had the priviledge of hauling Mr. Dobbin to my place(pre-show "staging") last night and it is very obvious he has been cared for and loved on extremely well in the last couple of months......he is SPOTLESS and shiny and super friendly! He is currently in my round pen waiting for me to get off work so we can continue his journey to the show!

I love this horse! He is so kind and gentle, been there done that. Although he was letting JR push him around last night at feeding time, they were grazing side by side when I got to Jaime's.

Dobbin's such a sweet horse. He has such a wise old expression on his face, but he's really quite a loving old gentleman, and more and more his personality is starting to come out as he realizes that all the people in his life these days are kind and treat him well. I really enjoy this horse, and am so happy to see him walking so much more comfortably! Here he is with JR, after they decided they liked each other after all:

Dobbins is back here and settling back in. He is loving the baby and follows her around. She is nearly as tall as him already so it is very cute! he is starting to get his winter coat with all this false fall weather we have been having and i have not been able to wash him so hes really looking like a pasture boy right now. I am crossing myfingers and praying for warm weather becausehe needs a bath

We have recently had the need to make some changes to the foster care arrangements for Dobbin and Bandit.
11 days ago, we visited Dobbin & Bandit's foster home to drop off their winter blankets. Upon our arrival we noticed two things: one, there were more horses on the property than expected, and two, Dobbin had dropped quite a bit of weight since the last time we saw him, which was in August. The decision was made to remove him immediately from this foster home.
Dobbin was taken back to Monroe and was seen by our vet, who checked him over and saw no signs of illness or fever. She also looked at his teeth, and felt that they were still in pretty good condition. She recommended a careful feeding program to get him back to his correct weight. Dobbin is very thin; in fact, he is in worse shape that when we purchased him from the auction. But his appetite is very good, and he will remain in Monroe until he is back to normal.
Bandit was removed from the foster home the following weekend. Upon closer review, we have discovered that he too has lost weight, though not nearly to the extent of Dobbin. Bandit has been moved to a new foster home in Redmond, and is settling in well.
This situation is distressing to us, because we had maintained very close communication with this foster home. Fortunately we were able to catch this while it was still fixable, but we need to do even better. So we are taking another look at our foster program to figure out how to improve it. One solution will be to increase the frequency of in-person follow-ups. SAFE takes full responsibilty for the care and well being of all our horses, and we will work to further reduce the instances of having to remove horses from situations where they are not flourishing.
We should also add that several weeks ago, we were asked by this foster home to remove Bandit because he was acting aggressively towards Dobbin and other horses. We were asked to replace him with another SAFE horse that was more suitable. Although we had decided not to send another horse in his place, we had been working diligently to make other arrangements for Bandit and were in constant communication with the foster home about the situation.
In the interest of keeping the peace on this board, we ask that you refrain from making speculations or comments about the foster home itself. We would welcome your ideas as to how we can work more effectively with our foster homes in the future.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Very sad situation. As a "guardian" of 2 SAFE horses, and 2 other rescues I feel its my duty to keep everyone up to date and informed on the welfare of my boys and girls. I hadnt sent any pics of Lark/ Ish in almost a year, which was waaay to long. The udate of pictures is my way of letting everyone see how they are doing. Maybe a requiremnt for fostering would be some sort of monthy confirmation of the horses health. Throw away cameras arent expensive, and if the foster has no computer, they can always send the whole camera to any of the board staff for review If the emails/fone calls, or pictures are not made by the foster, monthly, then an automatic removal would be the consequence, or a sight check, with a warning. ?? If that doesnt happen then the horse is removed Rather than keeping this on Dobbins thread, might we start a new one for suggestions ?? no bs, but Ish,Lark,Mort and Buckwheat and they all say heylo to everyone.... ;D ;D ;D

What a relief that SAFE was able to intervene.
Although it is an unfortuneate turn of events it was resolved in a timely manner.
Perhaps more frequent site visits from SAFE volunteers would be helpful but also education on special needs horses is very helpful.
I wish you best of luck in returning Dobbins and Bandit to healthy horses.
