Bella (aka "Go Bella Go") is a 6 year old dark bay (almost black) Thoroughbred mare, approx. 16.1-16.2h. Bella came off the track last summer with a fractured sesamoid. Due to life changes, her previous owner chose to rehome her through SAFE. Bella moves sound and the injured leg is clean and tight. Bella has proven to be an extremely quiet and well-mannered young Thoroughbred. She can be a little pushy on the ground at times but most of the time she handles like a dream and takes changes in stride. She was perfect for the vet and willingly trotted in hand in a new environment with a regular halter and lead (no chain). She loads and hauls well. She is good with other horses and "middle of the pack". Photos of Bella (taken last summer at Emerald Downs): See update below in Bella's thread. We have new xrays on Bella that show a positive long-term prognosis for Bella, but she will need 6 months of additional rest (until August 2007) before starting under saddle. Probably best suited for dressage/flatwork, although some light low-level jumping might be a possibility if she stays sound for a couple of years in steady work. Bella is available for adoption now, but her rehab must be continued per vet's advice as a condition of her adoption. Adoption Fee: $500 Adoption contract, site visit, references required. No breeding. Currently located in Oregon City, OR Contact Jaime at jaime@safehorses.org if you are interested in adopting Bella.

Oh wow, she is GORGEOUS! How was she on the track? Bella earned a nice little bit of change for her owners over the years, earning just over $40,000.

Is Bella related to Azalea via Storm Cat? Bella has an appointment March 5th with Dr. Bryant at Pilchuck for new xrays.

Bella had new xrays taken today at Pilchuck with Dr. Bryant. First of all, she was such a good girl! My 3 year old went also and I had a heck of a time getting her in the trailer, and when she wouldn't load I tried putting Bella in, but then took her out again and put Tessa in front and her in back. Each time she walked right in with no hesitation and right back out again. She required no sedation for the xrays and trotted calmly in hand for her exam in a new place with another horse running around in a nearby paddock with not even a chain over her nose. And this is a horse that has been on stall rest for the last week! I can't say enough about her temperment.
I have good news about her xrays as well. Here's the write up:
Diagnosis and Findings: Healing LF Basilar Sesamoid fracture. Radiographically the fracture is healing with a fibrous union with some arthritis.
Instructions: 1) Clinically the horse is sound at a trot and had minimal increase in lameness following flexion. The range of motion in the LF fetlock is markedly decreased. 2) I would continue paddock turnout for the next 6 months. Then you may begin light exercise and if sound gradually test what she can do. Due to the nature of the fracture it is likely Bella can only do so much physical activity and time will tell how much.
Recheck: If lameness worsens or in 1 year to assess radiographically.
What this means is that rather than filling in the fracture with bone, she is filling it in with scar tissue. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it means she will likely always show the fracture on xray. He was very optimistic about her future as a light riding/dressage mount. I asked about limitations like jumping and he said "I wouldn't even go that far...if she stays sound being ridden for 2 or 3 years then some jumping might be a possibility."
The total for Bella's radiographs was $267.75.

This is WONDERFUL news to hear!!! So, should she still be in a stall at night and then turnout in a small paddock area?

A stall isn't required, but I'll probably still stall her at night for now as I am trying to fatten her up a bit.

How exciting! She is such a beautiful mare and it sounds like she's got an awesome temperment. Plus coming from Sharon you know she's had good care previously. She is going to make someone a great riding horse.
