OK, first off...this horse is a con artist. He is not at all lame. He was just playing lame while you guys were evaluating him. He is running around bsnlark's backyard like he is the one who came off the track and not Lark! He looks awesome and, like every gray horse, loooves the mud. He was trying to make friends with Clover but she wanted no part of him and was squealing. LOL.

LOL, I just realized he is an OTTB also...nevermind my last post. I thought he was an appendix, he's got a butt like a QH!

I can't remember if Ish is tattooed or not. He was listed as a TB and he sure looked like one as he was thinner when he came off the lot. He's filled out so much, I'm not sure anymore. He could be appendix. He was supposed to be an old roping horse.

I've been cozying up to Ish lately. He's funny. He's one of those where he will let you scratch his neck, but doesn't look at you, and steadfastly refuses to act like he's enjoying it. Then if you turn your back to him and ignore him, here comes the nose looking for more attention. I kept going with him yesterday until he was resting his cheekbones on top of my head as I gave him a neck message. I really like him!
I wonder if he was roped off of? He doesn't have the usual scarring on the top of the nose from the tie-down, even though the way his neck is built, you can see that he's spent a lot of time with his head in the air. I have to look for a tat but I want to get him more comfortable with me first so that he doesn't think I'm trying to do something bad to him if I pull up his lip.

Cat - that's what we were told about Ish - that he was an ex-roping horse.

And, do check again, but I think we did check for a tat when we vetted him and he didn't have one.

I just checked his records, Hannah didn't note a tattoo:
Subjective/Objective: Ishmael: Grey TB gelding, approx 20 yrs
History: Rescue horse, arrived at foster home 6/26/05 pm.
Physical Exam: Temp: 100, Pulse: 40, Resp: 12, MM: pink, CRT < 2sec, GI +/+ = WNL (within normal limits). Heart, lung and GI sounds within normal limits. BCS (body condition score) of 4/9, thin. Bright, alert and responsive. Eyes, ears, nose, lymph nodes, sinuses, musculoskeletal, integument within normal limits other than: No melanomas seen around anus/tail. Coughing noted while out in pasture, with thick muco-purulent nasal discharge bilaterally. Right front limb lameness noted at walk (3/5). Shoe with pad on right front, no shoe on left front; no change in lameness after shoe removed/hoof trimmed, no abscess or other abnormalities noted after trimmed. Bony proliferation over both front pasterns, more so on the left than right front, consistent with high ring bone (arthritis of pastern joint). Not resistant to distal front limb flexion at this time. Resistant to hind limb flexion bilaterally with mild effusion in both hocks.

My ferrier has watched Ish run , not just trot, around the pasture. He runs like a deer, and doesnt show any lameness wen he stops...( although it is there ).....
Sooooooooo, sometime this summer..... I might be atop the white wonder , Ish Ish and away..............

I wonder if his ringbone has fused? That can happen, and then they go sound again. It'd be great if that were the case. I haven't observed any lameness either, he runs around with Lark like they're in a race. Of course, we haven't put weight on his back, either. Have to wait and see!

Yes I think Hannah concluded it was, at the time, fused on the LF (the most visibly worse) and not in the RF (the one he was lame on). I remember Clayton saying the lameness was off and on. It may very well have fused since then.

Perfect timing for this discussion. The vet will be out early Sat am for shots. ( jello ,anyone ?? ) ;D
This will be the first time he will see Ish, so I will have him take a look at Ish's feet and evaluate him . Since Ish has been at rest for a little over a year, maybe he has progressed to the next level. If not he's happy just romping around w/ Lark..
I've been taking it slow w/him, he's only been here for 5 mos. He has a very low key nature like Clover, but can still be quick to move off at the site of the lead rope, or even walking into the stall w/ a blanket. ( in the stall he always moves off to the outside "patio" which also faces the roadway, wen I approach w/ blanket..Maybe hes a secret exhibitionist and wants to disrobe/be naked where everyone can see him...silly horse ) * So we shall see, wat we can see * sayd the blind man to his deaf wife...

I'm excited to hear what the vet says. That horse is totally rehabbed, LOL...he is fat and happy and looks 10 years old. It's time he earned his treats and I suspect he'd get a kick out of going for a ride here and there and seeing the world (or at least a bit more of Battleground).
