I agree with lots of piles of hay. I put each flake out separately. Horses are natural grazing animals and like to move around as they eat. Then when one pile is completely gone and those meanie mares chase sweet Ish off, he atleast can move to anther pile instead of not having any more food.

we've got the many piles routine down ok....but thats only possible in the dry weather.... its days like t day: try to get some food into them before i leave.. Ish decides he wants to quit eating and go outside, so outside he goes.... i drop hay in the covered area, but guess who's there first ...?? buckwheat.... Lark goes into a tizzy in her stall wen Ish goes outside, so now she wants out.....out she goes running to find Ish. then wat does she do She tries to bite him and herd him around the pen area.......... so as i left for work, there was Ish standing alone (snif ) w/o any hay he is still reluctant for anyone to approach and touch him w/o the benefit of a treat.... soooooooo, my new baby, is out in the rain just like some animal............. but hes got his warm raincoat ;D

Peggy - its hard for me to advise since I haven't seen your set up. It sounded though like you had some in/out access to your stalls. I don't know if they are attached paddocks or what, but personally, when it was raining I would consider keeping him in one of those rather than turning him out in the pasture. He won't get quite as much exercise that way, but it may be better. I guess the question is how much hay is he eating at night and in the morning before he gets turned out? If he is eating enough then he may not need any extra during the day. Most horses in boarding situations get fed morning and night and out during the day without any food. It looks like you have a little grass they can nibble on to keep them busy. If he's in good weight and maintaining, he might be fine without extra hay during the day.
I have also kept my horses in on really crappy days. Its not just for them, its to protect my pastures from getting too muddy also.

Mr. Ish got frisky today. ( i just heard from my daughter who was at the barn cleaning for me today, ;D). my resident coyote was up luring the horses at lunch time. the horses were up by the barn and Ish goes roaring down the hill after the coyote. The coyote, of course, just sat there but did finally move off aways, but continued its watch. It continued its watch for awhile then just strolled off.... the other day, Ish took his apple and ran down the hill w/ the whole thing sticking out.... hes a very quite goofy guy....

This morning Lark got to chase the coyote out of the pasture. Its so entertaining watching these 3 horses interact w/ one another. My barn has three stalls; Buck #1, Lark # 2, and Ish #3. I put the girls in first, then Ish has to walk past them to get to his stall. So now remeber back to the movie Dumbo, wen Dumbo or his Mom passed by the other "catty" elephants and the way they wud toss their heads and glare at them............ The girl s do this to Ish wen he walks by. They toss their heads at him, and glare. Im sure with Larks long neck and the addtion of a trunk she cud probably smack him.......... And sweet gentle Ish just keeps on walkng.. ( i can imagine a cartoon balloon above his head saying WOMEN !!!! ) And one of my neighbors came by tonite to let me know in case i hadnt put the horses in yet, that he had a cougar cross the road in front of him and come into my property..........im so well prepared, i dont even own a sling shot let alone a gun............ya think, here kitty kitty wud work ?

Cougars scare me...I live right next to the Santa Monica Mt. range on the north end of the San Fernando Valley and there are plenty of cougar sitings there. I quit walking the trails above my house in the early morning hours because it got too nerve wracking to keep a lookout above and below me in case one of those big kitties thought my dogs looked like a lovely breakfast!

It seems that Ish has ( and has had ) a mild case of Heaves. I had some Cough Free at home, so i gave him some in his dinner last night. ( to me it smells like it has ginger in it ) He didnt like it, but of course Buckwheat, the food ho, loved to get Ish's grain too. Ish got a new bowl for dinner. So , this morning they all got their breakfast, but Ish cud still smell the Cough Free and decided he wanted somethng else to eat. I dumped the first bowl and coaxed him back onto the stall to eat by hand feeding him. It took abt 20 mins of hand feeding to finally convince him I hadnt put "cooties " in his food and just like Goldie Locks , he ate it aaaaaaaaaaaalll up !! He's so gentle and gentiel ( sp )...I think he whispered to me that he is a decendant (reincarnation ) of Sir Winston Churchill, A mighty fine English gent...

the kids got their feet trimmed on Sunday. He came early so the horses werent up at the barn. Of course Buck was first up, carrots and sweet talk. From there it became a circus, Lark decided it was time to run and run and run up and down the hill, circle the barn paddock, buck up really really high, chase poor ol Ish.. .Rite, !!!!! He , Ish, was right in there w/ her, running and running and bucking and running some more up and down the hill.
i turned to the drop dead gorgeous , tite fitting wrangler wearing young ferrier i have and sayd, We'll , at least now u can see how Ish moves on his poor ol front feet. And move Ish did, he runs w/ o showing his lameness. Actually gallops would be a better description.
finally lured Lark into the barn, had her feet trimmed and put her into a stall. Buck was already in her stall. Then it was time to try to lure Ish into the barn. After abt 20 mins he came in and stood like a champ. The ferrier made a few minor adjustments to ease up how he stands on his front feet and also on one of his hind hoofs.
all this time Lark is racing bk/forth , in/out the bk end of Ish's stall cuz she cant see Buckwheat one stall over. When all was done, Lark had paced herself into a sweaty mess !!
But they sure are purty wen they run...........................!!!!

Wow...that sounds like it was magnificent to watch, but my heart would have been in my throat worrying about one of those two hurting themselves. I'm glad to know they can still get around!!

Ish is so quick on his feet now, now that he has to move out of Lark and Bucks way. Actually he has on his Quick -as -a -Flash suit , I've even seen him jump tall weeds in a single bound, and faster than a coyote running uphill..
