Awww, Azalea misses her babies! She can be Auntie Azalea. She sure does. This morning Shoqinah was with her, running under her neck, chewing on her rain jacket (there may be sprinkles today and I didn't want her to get wet! ) and she just stood there contentedly with her head resting on his back. Then he started chewing on her neck and she started grooming him back. It was so cute, she is fabulous with him! Those babies do snore - cracked me up hearing Fin. And he was loud! I actually sat down next to him and he laid his head in my lap - it was so sweet. I love my little guy!

That little guy is absolutely stunning! The nicest pattern of spots I've seen on an Appy, I'm quite sure! His face is too cute!

Hey Peri, I am curious about this winter and since you have a little baby now too I thought I would ask you if you have thought about your little guys legs getting cold. I know some folks use blankets and some don't, but wouldn't the legs be colder than anything for these little guys? I was a worried about Rosco's legs because they are sooo tiny and thin. Would there be any down side to putting on those leg protectors that they use for trailering etc...to keep their legs warm? Are you doing anything for your little guy or am I worrying for nothing?

I think your little guy will be just fine Amy. He is going to get VERY furry in a short amount of time, in fact I bet he will be so furry he will just look like one little puff of fur. I blanket my older horses that don't grow much coat or are in work, but I did not blanket Tessa and still haven't, because I think it is important that they grow their winter coat in fully the first few years and learn how to adjust to the cold on their own.

Hey Amy, I gree with Jaime though I will have a blanket for Shoqinah just in case. But with Rosco's stall you can keep him in, I think he will be just fine!
Really for here, the biggest issue isn't the cold but the wet. Some of my horses choose to stand outside in the rain next to their shelter, but so far Shoqinah has run under cover whenever the rain starts to fall!

It's been way to long since I've updated any info on my now STRAIGHT LEGGED colt
Shoqinah is as good as gold. He is one of the first ones to come up to me in the pasture and loves scratched and gives great kisses.
He did a job on me though during one of the recent snow storms we had. With all the snow on the hotwire, it wasn't too hot. I went out to feed one night and the middle wire was down in two place - YIKES - and NO HORSES were in sight! *#(*$&(* were my first thoughts.
I whistled for the horses and they slowly started appearing from the woods in the back. I held my breathe until last but not least, out meandered Shoqinah. Phew I thought - I was lucky this time. I put out everyones feed and gave them all their good night lovings.
When I turned to head back to the house I finally looked at the fresh blanket of snow on the backyard - the one that no one had walked in and was pristine. Umm - not anymore. My backyard was full of little hoof prints! I guess Mr. Shoqinah has quite a time dancing around the backyard before he finally decided it was time to go back in with the herd. I'm sure he looked lovely as he was doing it in his blanket from Auntie Gala.

Shoqinah is 13 months old and with straight legs! Though he does have his Mama's bad hoofs and we are working on those with trimming. He's about 13.3 now both front and back. He's never been butt high. He is the friendliest of the horses, very much like his mama. He is an in your face what are you doing kinda guy which is why most of the pictures are close ups with him walking towards me. He always wants to see what I'm doing. Today was trim day and Skittles decided not to be caught and was riling up the herd. My farrier was standing in the pasture, and while all my oldies were running around like twits, Shoqinah decided it would be much more fun to hang out with Gary and get to know eachother. He's a very good boy. Check out these forelegs - he know's he's hot! Still as uniquely colored as ever. Mandatory cute butt shot (with his cow-hocked hind legs....sigh ) Doesn't he have the cutest face ever!

He's cute!
Cow hocks are not so bad. I've had a lot of good performance horses with cow hocks.

Yeah...such a difference when you FIX it when they're babies! I am so tired of seeing young stock that someone dropped the ball on, that could have been restored to normalcy.
This guy is so lucky he landed in the right spot to be born!
