Okay everyone, let's watch my baby heal (I hope!) Here he is at one day old and bad me never had the camera for the next month to take more photos! His right leg did straighten quite a bit, but his left is quite bad. Here is a link to the best information I could find on it. He is carpus valgus and the problem is in the growth plate so the BoSe wouldn't be effective. We also talked about braces but didn't think this would be the best application due to the constant adjustments needed and sensitivity of baby skin. Right now we are hoping to avoid the screw and wire surgery they talk about, but it could be the next step. evrp.lsu.edu/v8/8angular.aspHere is His Highness this morning(still no name but leaning towards Shoqinah). Sorry for the quality of the photos, hard to get away from him long enough to get a shot in the stall! They are on stall rest for probably atleast 30 days, but at least they get a view!

He is soooo cute. I am not a big fan of appy's but I LOVE blanketed appy's (really dont like leapords or the small tails). But he is a doll.

I got to meet "baby" in person just before the clinic. He is a doll!! It looks like he is finding ways to amuse himself and mom doesn't seem too upset being stallbound. I bet this guy is going to be athletic, and the surgery will be well worth it!

I hope so! He certainly doesn't let the splint slow him down! He still runs, bucks and rears even all bandaged up. He also is quite the escape artist and makes a run for the stall door everytime I open it!
He has quite a fan base at the vets. They had one of their clients come look at him and she deemed him a dun. His skin has the dark line down the back and the spots on that line are black. I know they will change color, but I sure like him as he is now!
They also said he is all boy! He was quite upset when he woke up with a wonky leg. Now I'm afraid he's going to bash me with it everytime I go in! ;D He's quite the sweet little guy and I hope he doesn't have to go through any more trauma!

He definitely has beautiful appy markings and a darling face. Yes he is for sure a dun. I sure hope he keeps those pretty spots and dun stripes. But with an all white momma there is the possibility he will grey out.

Actually, momma is a white Appy - not grey - she was born white and thus he is safe from the greying gene.

My boss has horses at a few of the large breeding farms in KY. 90% of the foals have some kind of surgery to straighten their legs before they reach a year. The complications are few and the surgeries seem to even help the foals that are really crooked. Good luck and thanks for sharing with us.

Even w/o my glasses, the last two pictures definately show he certainly IS all boy He certainly is a relaxed one! My girls used to be embarassed to go and visit him because he more often than not is letting it all hang out! Today was bandage adjust day, the vet moved the splint around a little bit to be helping with slight over at the knee and also pushing a bit more from the outside to help straighten his left leg more. The right one was left alone. Tuesday or Wednesday is bandage change day. Every time the vet works with him he comments on what a good temperment he has. He's a very good boy and so is his Momma - who's my baby too!

Baby had his bandages changed yesterday. Still no name, now it's a race to finalize one before Viv's boy! How embarassing to be almost 6 weeks old with no name. Leaning towards "Shoqinah" His right leg is doing great, the left not as great. However, the splint on the left was for his being a tad over at the knee...that is now fixed but buy having the splint for that purpose it slowed the straightening a bit. Now he just has bandaged on both knees. Yesterday he was looking pretty crooked, but he was always a very happy boy and could barely stand. Today he is looking better on both legs. He is still limping on his left...it's like he periodically forgets he can still bend the leg. I'll get photos of him now up soon. I must say he isn't slowed down a bit - last night during stall cleaning I finally felt the end of those shooting hind legs during one of his buck, snort and rear sessions - OWIE!

Just as long as you don't end up with splints too, it's all good. He's feeling good - that's way cool!

I took photos and video of baby last night and forgot to bring the camera to work to upload them! Much quicker connection than at home. He is doing great, the right leg is basically straight, and the left has much more change than I had expected. Hoping our 50-50 chance works! My dad was by and he hadn't seen him since he hauled him to and from surgery and he was shocked at how much change he has made, along with how much he has grown! My dad is not a horse person, but it was so cute to see him scratching Dancer's rear when she backed up to him for a good rub!
