She looks great Jan!! Awesome!
Dutchess is by Seas the Golden Day out of Olympic Spirit, aka "Gypsy", and is a full sibling to Willow ("Gypsy Seashell") and Phoenix. Also a full sibling to Gypsy's 2004 filly "Midsummer's Eve" who is owned by Maya/Vivian's adopter. Gypsy was believed to be one of the deceased mares on the Carnation property.

Thanks for that Jaime. I'm pretty sure I had that written down but wasnt certain it was absolute. It's nice to be able to say with certainty she is pure Saddlebred. She is just a little "stronger" build than typical Saddlebreds right now (which is why they think she is a Quarter cross) but as she gets taller her look is becoming more elegant.
Her trainer has worked with hundreds of horses over the last 40 or so years he has been doing this. He is so impressed with Dutchess he ranks her easily in the top 20 horses he has ever worked with! And she is only in week 3 of her course. I think I should have a bumper sticker made that says "My Saddlebred is smarter than your Honor Roll student." ;D ;D

Seas the Golden Day was bred by Antigo Saddlebreds out of Bow Washington. They are a more "sturdy" looking Saddlebred. They have done just about everything with their Saddlebreds including packing them up into the mountains. I think Phoenix and Duchess get that "stronger" build from the Antigo side. Check out their website: www.palominosaddlebred.com

Coincidentally we had gone to visit Antigo a year and a half ago when we first started looking for our TB's new pasture mate. We really enjoyed our visit there. The owner was very nice and accomodating and we really liked the horses they had. All the mares that we met were similar in demeaner to Dutchess; very sweet, courteous, interested, and of course, beautiful. There were a couple there we were seriously considering when we ran across the SAFE website for the first time just after the Elledge rescues. We obviously chose to go with SAFE but not from any shortfall on Antigo's part. We wanted to help the horses in need. Antigo has wonderful animals. I still admire the pictures we took of the pinto of theirs we wanted. What an incredibly small world that these horses are all so closely related. So, I guess we kind of indirectly did get some Antigo Saddlebreds. How funny.

Starting week 4 of Dutchess's training. She is still progressing very well. Janis has been getting in there in the round pen and warming Dutchess up with some drills. Janis also practiced mounting Dutchess several times from both sides. Dutchess was rock solid and soft eyed the whole time. Towards the end of her lesson she gets walked thru the trails on the property to have some fun and get practice going over bridges, tight spaces, etc etc. She was having so much fun she wanted to trot a few times but nothing ever spooked her, she was just feeling her youthful enthusiasm. Pony tails and happy trails!

"Dutchy-Girls'" training has been going so well! She is so smart and so sweet when going thru her training routines. She usually starts Mondays a bit excited - because she is a youngster after all - but as soon as we let her know "school is in session" she instantly behaves like quite the proper school girl. There are a few big dollar Arabs there at the facility now and the difference between how trainable Dutchess is and them is mind boggling. They are all wide eyes and flared nostrils running around like wild horses stuck in a round pen. Dutchy looks across the fence at them and casually lets out a big sigh that seems to say: "amateurs..." She has backed off the bit now and takes her ques with very gentle pressure. Even I can get her to side-pass, walk, trot, transition, 360, etc, etc with only the gentlest of ques (and I am the one who deserves the "amateur" sigh) but she is always very forgiving and respectful. Dutchy is getting front shoes this week so she can head up for a two week "trail training" session with one of the trainers who's property borders a large forest. This way she can put to practice many of the things she has learned in "class" and gain exposure to all the "spooky" things the woods have to offer. I'm sure she'll be quite the pro since she is already miles ahead of most that have gone thru the program. Here I am yesterday taking a test drive with Dutchess "keeping her on the rail."

She is progressing so fast! All the work you have done with her beforehand is clearly paying off.

Duchess finished her two weeks of "trail ride" training today. She did terrific! The trainers are thinking she is the finest horse they have ever trained. And they have been training the "big dollar" horses for years. So much for the "rescue horses come with issues" myth. Dashed, busted, whatever your favorite way to end a myth. Not only is she "as good as" the big dollar horses, she is valedictorian. The top. As much as I would like to take credit for Duchess's great progress I cannot. It is all her. She has a great heart and a willing spirit. She just wants to please people. Janis and I both rode Duchess a couple days during her training and she was just a pleasure to be on. So sweet, confident, alert, calm... just a really balanced personality. Did I mention smooth to ride? Very smooth. So here is Jan; valedictorian of her class in 19... we'll just leave it at some date in the 1900's , riding Duchess; valedictorian 2009!
