I am picking up a "sorta" rescue this week. a 16 yr old arabian mare, from a nice family that is struggling both financially and physically to care for them. She is most probably bred, luckily she and the stallion are fully papered, although i intend to keep both her and the foal, having papers reduces the risk that the horse is "lost" My problem is that the stallion happens to be the offspring of the mare. Some serious inbreeding going on. I am concerned that there will be complications and have done some research already. I would like to get some input on this to ease my mind. The lines run to Bask, Baskafire, 3 crosses to Commet, Susecion, and others. With the already high prevalence of inbreeding, though to a lesser degree than this most recent i am concerned there will be serious complications with the resulting foal. She is not confimed yet but was left with the stallion for "several weeks" and that would have been 2 months ago at least. Let me know what you think!? and please dont be too critical of the current owners, they are good people.

Even the "experts" can't predict how this will turn out. There is an old horsemen's saying that it is linebreeding when it works, and inbreeding when it doesn't. There is the potential to itensify both good and bad genetic traits. Get her checked by a vet a soon as you can and discuss your options with the vet.
