about $1100 for 30 days, including very very nice board. So when is his first 30 days up? End of June? That's $36.67 a day for 30 days...and there are about 500 people on this board...soooo, if everyone sent in .07 cents then we could get another month in! ;D Then you could say " I've put in my seven cents worth " get it? aar ar ar haha Dang it...my math is off...it would be $2.20 for each person, never mind.

Not so good news on Jack. I just got a call from the vet down at the Jones Farm. The injury that Jack sustained when he got his leg over the hotwalker is worse than originally thought. It is quite deep and he believes it may involve the tendon sheath which is of course bad. I am having him call Dr. Hannah to consult. He said right now he has flushed and wrapped it and started him on antibiotics. There are other diagnostics he could do but they sounded expensive, anyway that's why I had him call Dr. Hannah and hopefully she can give me a recommendation having a better understanding of what he is describing and our circumstances. He did say repeatedly that Jack is very explosive and difficult to work on, and this wasn't helping the situation.

He will probably need stall rest. It would be totally worth it to get him a Reserpine shot. It really is a lifesaver for hotheads on stall rest....well, hotheads in general!! Honestly....I was afraid this horse was going to hurt himself. IMHO, if he freaks out about the hotwalker so much, don't force the issue. Most of the sporthorse people that would likely adopt a horse like Jack would never need him to go around a hotwalker anyways. I know that he is in the hands of a very respected trainer, but that is just my opinion. poor Jack

Well, we are at decision time with Jack. I had a brief chat with Hannah - she had gotten a message from the other vet but hadn't talked to him yet. First of all, an infected flexor tendon sheath is very, very bad. Prognosis for a full recovery are poor. She said we could get it to heal possibly but the likelihood of ongoing lameness issues due to adhesions and scar tissue is high. The other issue is his trainability. His month of training is up tomorrow, and we can't afford another month where he is at $35/day. He is still pretty untrusting and/or unwilling to be cooperative. He shows signs of true fear about having people above/on him, but also shows signs of not being very cooperative about his training either. He lay down one day when being led to the arena. He continues to buck - seriously buck - under saddle. When the vet went to tranquilize him, he reared and struck at him. I am waiting to hear back from Hannah who hopefully talked to the other vet on the phone and got more detail. However, I think we are possibly going to have to make a hard decision about Jack.

This is so sad. Was he this bad when Slew was caring for him?

Oh jaimie. I am so sorry to hear this. Rescue is never easy and always draining. It seems it's been even more so lately.

Jack has always been very, very head shy and also hard to catch. Neither Bonnie nor Slew were doing much with him or asking anything of him, just treating him kindly, so he wasn't really a problem. But we knew he had issues - we just didn't know how bad they were.

The trainer that he is with now is a very good trainer. I have heard some wonderful stories about him. I know that some trainers just don't work well with a horse, but I've never heard of a horse that this trainer couldn't get through to at least a little bit.
Whatever decision that is made, I can tell you for sure that I will be right here behind SAFE. Whatever is best by the horse is the decision that will be made. I'm positive of that.
