You know I am getting excited about the 2009 SAFE Show. ;D
Have any of the plans been made for it yet? I have had a lot of fun doing this the last two years and am anxiously awaiting this years show. I want to be able to plan for attending this year.

A huge thank you goes out to mymercedes for researching show venues for us this year, and for finding a great location for the 2009 SAFE Benefit Horse Show! The 2009 SAFE Benefit Horse Show will be held on Saturday, August 22, 2009 at Frontier Park/Pierce County Fairgrounds in Graham WA. Kim reports: Graham is about 10 minutes south of Puyallup. I have ridden there before. This is a very nice arena, good footing, lots of parking, a smaller warm up arena, and the main arena is extremely large where we could actually set up the trail course at one end and still have MORE than ample room for the other classes using the rest of the arena. They have lots of bleacher seating, and great stalls. It reminds me a bit of Bridle Trails in looks and ease of use. This would be a nice central location for those coming from the far south and north ends of the state. There is a nice announcer booth with speaker system. Here are some photos that Kim took for us:

Stalls! That is the ONE thing Bridle Trails didn't have that would have rocked to have last year. Holy crap...I just looked and saw the date too. Looks like it's time to start planning my summer around the show.

I was just at the Frontier Park arena today, and it was great! There are also a lot of really neat trails on the backside of the property for those who want to explore a bit between classes. I think this will be a great place for our show!

Good idea Cat, as a way to get more entries to our show. However......I do have a thought about making it too "breed quality". The charming and fun part of this show, IMHO, is that it is very low keyed. You don't have to have the best of everything to compete. There is no show attire required, no $2000.00 saddle or super expensive, professionally trained horse necessary to have fun and take home a ribbon. I fear that if we get too many AQHA point earners at our fun show, it will discourage those with the less than perfect horses from feeling that they finally have a show in which they can compete and not feel uncomfortable.
The great thing about this show is that we can take rescued horses flaws and all, and our everyday tack and go have a great time with others who want to show off their progress. Having been involved in the AQHA and other breed show world, I am aware that even at the smaller open shows, the tack, bling, fancy horses, and big time trainers still exist and make it almost impossible for the everyday rider to have a chance. They not only go in the breed classes, but also go in many of the other classes including walk trot etc to "school" their horses.
Just a thought anyway. Of course the idea here is to make as much money for SAFE's benefit, and have the most successful show possible, but I worry that to make it too breed quality may take some of the fun out of it. ON THE FLIP SIDE, it would be GREAT for those who have registered rescues to be able to maybe get a point or two on their horse that they may not be able to get in the big shows. Also, since our show is nearing the end of the show year, maybe those more serious competitors will have already met their points goals for the season, and be only concentrating on the breed shows.
Just a thought. This show just has such a fun atmosphere for all. I think having it in this more central location, we'll get more entries no matter what. This is a big horse area with many, many 4H, pony club and other riders, who are looking for just this kind of venue to show off their horses.
If we can get class lists/entry forms by the beginning of summer, I will be happy to take them to the local tack stores!

Laurie, can we count on Billy Bob and Ralph's appearance this year? They've almost become a part of the show!! So far, I am planning on bringing them. They are mini celebrities ;D I would also like to add, if anyone from the Portland area would like to attend the show, we have a 3-horse, slant load trailer and could transport a couple of horses to the show. Let me know and I will let you know the cost.

MM, I would always want to keep the "rescue horse" classes which are so perfect for the greenies coming out for the first time! (Horse AND rider greenies) The "real" show horses wouldn't qualify for those classes - unless of course they could prove they were neglected rescues at one time which is the case every once in a while.
I think it'd be fun to have Rescue Horse Halter back like the first show - I thought it was a hoot how some of the oldies got a ribbon because they were conformationally correct, even though they were seniors!
