BUCKWHEAT is a 20-25 year old small horse who looks like a large pony, 15 hh. Bay with a small star and a double snip. Right now he is a furry little guy in his winter coat. Buck is up to date on shots, worming, teeth and feet. He has some stiffness due to age and cold weather, but he is sound and quite energetic. His former owner rescued him from a kill buyer about 1 year ago. He is quiet and gentle, gets along well with other horses. A real cutie pie. We're not sure what his breeding is, best guess is he's Morgan or a Morgan cross. He's got bulging eyes like a Morgan, a large head and a very square muzzle. And he has the tiniest ears! Very nice hooves, too. His former owner has ridden him and says he is a bit of a handful under saddle. She says he's be a good leadline pony. Buck has nice manners on the ground, and trailered like a pro. Buck is currently located in Silverdale, WA. Adoption Fee: $free to a good home on a gift contract Contact Jaybird at bonnie@safehorses.org if you are interested in adopting Buck. I let him meet Jay & Oliver briefly over the fence after I unloaded him from my trailer yesterday. They all sniffed noses then Buck squealed and sort of struck out with his front hooves. I took to the back pasture and turned him out there, and he immediately started grazing and even rolled. A little while later I turned Oliver out in the pasture next to him. Buck wouldn't really approach the fence though. Last night, I got up at around 2am to check on him (from the window!) and Oliver was standing by the fence next to him. This morning after breakfast, I brought Ambassador Oliver into Buck's pasture. As I was leading Oliver over, Buck followed us along the fence nickering at Ol. I let Oliver go, and Buck proceeded to follow him around the pasture at a walk. When I left they were grazing side by side. Overall impression, he's a nice little guy, a bit reserved at the moment, but he nickers for food, is easy to approach, and seems to have good manners. He appears quite sound and pretty healthy.

Had a chance to see what's under that blanket today...he's got a cute little bod! He stood very nicely to be groomed.

Just for the record, Jaybird will not allow herself to have 3 horses on her property, therefore she is preferring to consider him a "large pony". I realize that 15 hands is hardly a large pony to most of the general horse population. (keep in mind also that her other two horses are 16+ and 17+, respectively).

Ha ha ha Jaybird - ;D - I can sympathize! (but not because of the 3 horses vs. 2 horse + 1 pony) ;D He sure looks like a been-there done-that kind of fellow.
Love his braided tail!

Oh - I love the picture of him and Oliver cozying up for a graze. What a good boy he is. Thanks for moving him in with the big boys temporarily JB!

Very cute Jaybird, I do the same thing, since two horses are my limit, we refer to the filly as "the filly" ...never a horse...

I know there has been some concern about the possibility that Buck has Cushings, due to his long coat? Well I am happy to report that he is shedding out like some kind of crazy shedding machine. I brushed him for about 10 minutes a few days ago, and took off enough hair to fill a shopping bag. Tonight I was petting him and was pulling huge handfuls of hair off his neck!! So hooray, probably not Cushings. But d'oh! No fun for his groom, me. Also I've had a couple people look at him and agree that he looks to be some kind of Morgan/Pony cross. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that I am certain he's part Morgan. I don't know if you guys agree or not, but I maintain that you can't judge by looking at photos. If you want to play guess-the-breed, you're gonna have to come over and see him in person. Bring a shedding blade with you!

The problem with shedding a winter coat is that it takes 2 months to open that present! It'll be great to see what lies beneath... Jayb I was looking closely at Patrick yesterday, and I think you might be on to something with your Morgan-x theory. Maybe Morgan x Welsh Cob? ( www.equine-world.co.uk/about_horses/welsh_d_pony.htm )

At 15 hands, I am just not seeing the pony in him. But I will go with either ArabX or MorganX.

Jenny can tell you! He looks just like a pony. Doesn't he, Jenny??
okay, Morgan X it is. (He doesn't look remotely Arab to me.)

Or even pure Morgan. He's got the look, and they can get quite the heavy coat in the winter. I still wouldn't rule out Insulin resistance, though. Arabs and Morgans both tend to be more susceptible.

Buena, would recommend having him tested for IR even if he's shedding? Is that easy to do?

Hmmmm - I do have a 2 horses limit but maybe...I could sneak one more over here and when my husband asks about it - I'll just say..."oh that's just that wierd lookin' neighborhood kid - isn't it awful? He seems to like hanging around our horses tho..." Think I can pull it off? I think you should just call Buck a MOPORAB and be done with it. Which is distinctly better than a MOFORAB!
