On Tues. June 9th at 7:00 PM in Vancouver City Council Chambers (210 E. 13th Street, Downtown Vancouver) there is scheduled a proposal to amend the codes related to the keeping and raising of livestock such as horses, bovine, pigs, sheep, goats, llamas, donkeys, etc. This code change effects property within the city limits now and will affect property within the urban growth boundary as the city annexes these areas.
The first change proposal is the new definition of domestic animals (which previously limited this definition to dogs, cats , etc.) Under the new proposal farm animals will be classified as a domestic animal. This includes horses, cows, sheep, goats, llamas, donkeys, etc.
The owner of domestic (livestock) animals would be required to provide a barn or other enclosed structure. This means no more "loafing" sheds. Three sided enclosures will not be allowed if this proposal goes through.
You will no longer be allowed to use electic fencing or barb wire fencing if this propsal goes through. They do not specifiy only the perimeter fencing. Does this mean you can't divide your property into several pastures with electric fencing? There is no indication that there will be any exemptions on this requirement.
But the biggest change will be the fact that you will only be allowed ONE animal per acre - and this DOES NOT include the land your house sits on!! If you own a house that sits on 1 acre you will not be allowed to have a goat or whatever. It has to be ONE ACRE excluding the land your house sits on - so you would need like 1-1/4 acres in order to have a farm animal.
Please attend this meeting and let them know your feelings!!! Hope to see you there!!
