Olly is a 25+ year old QH-type gelding rescued from CBER. Were were told he was an old ranch horse and he appeared to have been used hard - but he is a kind, affectionate, and personable fellow. He is quite elderly and his teeth were in bad repair, so he was very thin at the feedlot. He also had severe conjuntivitis in both eyes, ringbone in both fronts, and was lame off and on. SAFE took him in, and with the help of good dental care, twice-daily high-fat mashes, and lots of love this boy made a remarkable transformation. Here is Olly at the feedlot: And here is Olly after a few months of foster care: But who would want an old lame special needs horse like Olly? Why, a little 5 year old girl would, of course. A family came to see Jasper. They were looking for a family horse for their two adopted daughter, ages 5 and 11, who had also been "rescues" of a sort, from drug-abuse and neglect. While they were there, the youngest girl was taken with Olly, who was as usual, grazing loose in the yard as he preferred to be "where the action was". We plopped her on Olly's back and he happily carted her around for 1/2 hour or so, and I'm not sure who was more proud, the horse or the little girl. When they got home, the little girl refused to wash her hands, as she didn't want to wash away Olly's smell. They were destined for each other, and after building more shelter space and working on their pastures a bit more, they made room for Olly to join their family. He has found his forever home in the heart of one little girl.

This story of Olly and the family makes me cry. What a beautiful story. Any news on the family and Mr. Olly?

I think this story should be submitted to one of the monthly horse magazines, they always feature a story of sorts. This story will be tears to many and also bring more awareness to the public.

I have an update on Olly!! (they call him Oliver now)
Oliver is everyone's delight. He has turned out to be a great horse. He's looking good and thriving on senior feed. He has tons of peronality. We took him for out little girl Abby to ride but when any of the others are being ridden he demands his attention. He is very playful and will carry around a plastic bucket in his teeth. He is gentle and at one time was evidently well trained. He is living out his days as an adored older gentleman should...

Great to hear this. People give up too easily on horses who have a little lameness. I'm almost 40, I have some lameness too, and I still work, ha ha. There are lots of jobs a horse who isn't up to hard work anymore can do.

Here's a cute little update on Olly (now called Oliver):
Oliver is allowed to free graze when someone is outside. There is no chance that he will wander away because he is absolutely under foot. The other day I was planting rose bushes and he picked up a packaged one and carried it away. - He will play with anything that has plastic. He just looks at me and carries my small tools in his mouth.

He looks GREAT! for nearly 30 years old. And what a wonderful story about the love of a five-year-old girl. Awww. Just goes to show all kinds of horses can find great homes, doesn't it?

It's hard to take pictures of a moving target, Olly was afraid of the flash , in the first picture you can see the little girls legs she was trying to find his itchy spot so he would calm down. She was soooo cute.
