Went to the auction with Tash today. We went back to see all of the horses and came upon a little white arab standing with a saddle on. I looked at his butt and saw his spine sticking out...and showed him to Tash. He was really thin and couldn't believe he was going to be ridden through. The owner was trying to hide just how thin he was with the saddle. After a bit we headed in and sat down and bought a bit of tack...LOL I love those surprize boxes. After 3:00pm the horses started in.....and I couldn't get that little gelding out of my mind. When he was ridden in I bid on him and bought him for $50.00. I knew he wasn't going to go to kill and the owner said he wasn't going home and laughed about it....which irritated me a bit. It was her fault he was in the shape he was in. Tash is going to help me rehab him and he will stay out in her pastures. When we loaded him up he jumped right in the trailer and basically wanted to get the hell out of dodge. When we got to the pasture we put a blanket on him and put him in a small paddock and he dove right for the grass and completely ignored the hay. I don't think he has had grass for a long time. His name is Casper...and by next Spring I think your going to see a totally different horse Casper when we first saw him So Thin Casper and Jackie

So wheat do you think happened to his teeth? Sometimes cribbers have worn teeth, but these almost look like they were broken.
Good save to you two. Since he is grey be sure to check him out for melanomas. I am looking forward to seeing his progress. You should have this thread moved to the other rescues section so it won't get lost in the general chat board.

Little Miss's teeth look exactly like that. Theories are either chewing wood or bark off trees or running their teeth up and down on stall bars. It makes aging them a bit of a challenge.

Jaime is right.
Little Miss' acres of paddock fences were all chewed almost in 1/2 and tree bark was stripped from all the trees. She was skinny when we picked her up and teeth like this on a skinny horse makes me think they were eating anything they could to keep themselves alive.
If he looks this bad this year in Dec when we are still having warm and relatively dry weather - can you imagine what he looked like last year by spring when the winter weather was much more severe?
His teeth are probably a result of eating whatever he could when his humans could not be bothered to feed him.
Good for you for taking him!!

Fred's teeth are like that too (Fred's top teeth are way worse), but when he had his teeth floated, I learned he had an underbite (lower incisors protrude in the front of upper incisors), and that the top teeth just got worn down after two and a half decades of chewing.

Thank you for saving Casper! At least Ron told the owner to take the horse home and feed it before she tries to sell it. We already figured out that wasn't going to happen. I'm glad you got him. The woman had another horse at the auction that looked fat and well cared for. I wonder what happened to poor Casper.

I am almost certain that Casper was on Craigs List a few months ago. Do you know where he came from?
There was also a grey Arab Gelding that I offered to come see back several months ago and before I could come evaluate him they wrote and told me they'd found a home. I distinctly remember the photos of a very underweight horse with a saddle and a kid on it & I was upset that they were showing this obviously skinny, out of shape horse with a saddle to cover his obvious ribs.
I wonder if this is the same horse....I'll check my inbox at home and see if I still have any information in my email history. I did think it was down in the south end...like maybe Yelm or Roy or something like that.
the name Casper is very very familiar though...!?!?!?
ps: Grey Arabs with Pink noses.....absolutely heaven in my book! =8O)

If you have any of the old ads or contact information, I would very much like to see it. I would like to know who exactly the seller was and all I have is the last name and the fact that she was wearing a rodeo jacket.

I wish I knew what happened to poor Casper, but soon he will be a new Casper. . I didn't know that the previous owner had another horse there. When Ron told her to take Casper back home and feed him...the owner laughed at Ron and said she wasn't taking him back home. I knew then he was in trouble. i still can't believe she rode him through the auction in that shape. What a dumb a**. Plus she stole the halter off of him...grrrrrr
