Kaiyote, I wouldn't call it a bias but the goal was to rescue her to fatten her up and tune her up and rehome her in the period of time while the horse I really wanted was giving birth and weaning her foal. So, of course I was disappointed to find out that was most likely impossible. She is a sweet mare and she will be taken care of for the rest of her life, but that means she has made it financially impossible for me to have the horse I really wanted and that is too bad. I've decided I'm simply not meant to trail ride, I never seem to manage to own a horse who can do it without being an idiot or falling on their face!

We had a real milestone last night - she jogged back and forth while she knew I was thinking about mounting but I just waited until she was done and you know what, she actually stood still for it tonight!
Hopefully we will be able to put the "trotting off" habit to rest.

So, Safehorses came out again on Saturday and played photographer. When we started out, there was someone in the round pen and in the round arena, so I thought we'd try going into the big arena with the, eek, other horses. Sunline was just not in favor of that from the get-go. Check out the entirely p.o.'d body language in this picture: In case you needed a close up of the OMG THE BIG FAT D-RING SNAFFLE IS TORTURING ME expression, here ya go: There was a definite hump in the back and she was not happy about the very out of control large gray horse in the big arena, so as soon as the round pen opened up, I decided we were going to play it safe and trot in there for a bit. I also gave up and snapped the reins back to the halter since it was obvious we were NOT doing the bit thing that morning. She did that, tail switching, hump still in back, and displaying all the flexibility of a section of wooden fence. Sunline: No, I don't want to bend. What is this, yoga class? At least she took that piece of steel out of my mouth. Tell ya what, I'll put it in your mouth and you see if that feels good. No, I don't really want to bend this way, either. Can I go back to my stall and eat now? OK, at least we're in the round arena now and I'm not running circles like a hamster on a wheel. Much happier. Hmmm, nothing in my mouth, nice scenery, this is not so bad. I can lower my head, see? Why are you sitting the trot and pushing me? I can't trot any faster than this...really. OMG do you actually want me to canter? Like, dragging your butt around on my back? Um, was that in my contract? What do you mean, there was no contract? Uh oh...
Sunny actually did canter for the first time, a few strides each direction. Unfortunately they were all on the left lead but that was what I expected. I figured since we got a nice soft canter that was all I was going to ask for the first time. She is super comfortable! Overall, she's coming along great. Next up this week or next, a tooth floating and some Adequan. She tends to come out stiff in the hocks but quickly works out of it, so I think some Adequan will make a lot of difference for her. She will get her second adjustment in August - just talked to the chiro and we are going to let her keep muscling up and getting fitter before doing her again. See what we've got in another month! Thanks again to Safehorses for playing photog, and check out the pics of her riding Sunny in the general chat area.

Not much to report as the heat is so bad that all I've been doing is turning her out and hosing her off every night at around 10 PM! (Not that she minds the lack of actual work) I do have more pictures since I'm a diehard shutterbug...I think she has gained a bit more weight though the ribs still show in some pictures. Her teeth are being done on Saturday, found someone who will do her without sedation as I do not believe in sedating horses in high heat.

Love the pics, she looks great Cat.
Does she show fear while riding with that blind eye? Or is she mild mannered enough that sounds on the left don't bother her?

She looks great! I was cracking up at that first picture with her head in the air, evading the bit. So familiar... ;D

She never spooks at noises. She amazes me that way. She did not spook on July 5th when they were blowing off leftover fireworks in the neighborhood. I was literally spooking on her back - the noise would make ME kind of jump, and she didn't react a bit.
However, she does fear horses passing her on that side. Doesn't do anything terrible but gets scooty and nervous. I think she fears being kicked/bitten on that side. Most of the time I ride, I have the arena to myself so it's not a big deal.
I want to order her a Dr. Cook's bitless bridle but sheesh even on Ebay they are $100!

It finally cooled off Saturday night, so she wanted to run run run! Video - yes, it will take a while to d/l www.pretzelkitty.com/images/horses/P7290035.MOVAll the while screaming and whinnying for her friends! And occasionally stopping for a rest. Look, she has a butt! I'm so pleased. She sure didn't have a butt two months ago (go back to my page 1 pics).

Sun and Azalea sure move similarly - that prissy girl trot and stiff legged canter! Very pretty girl.

Before and after, right about 4 months since she was on the lot. And wearing her new bitless bridle...now if only we could get her hocks sorted out enough to actually work her. She should be getting x-rayed this week or next. She was pretty sound for a while but then started getting worse. I figured I shouldn't sit on her, so I haven't done so, although I have continued to free longe her to keep her muscles up. I'm looking forward to finding out exactly what I'm dealing with, soundness-wise. In the meantime, Princess Sunline is getting her first professional massage today!
