Is anyone interested in donating time to benefit SAFE? King County is looking for Poll Workers and will pay the charity of your choice (choose SAFE!!!!) $125 for each person who works it. The time requirements are a 3-hour training class and all day on voting day (6am - 10pm). Yes, it's a long day, but it could be a very interesting experience! I will make a call tomorrow and find out any more details. But I'd like to see how many folks would be interested before I make a commitment. The dates of the upcoming elections are Tuesday, August 19th for the Primary Election and then another day in November for the general election. To the best of my knowledge you do not have to work both of them. It's an awesome opportunity to participate on a civic level and raise some funds in the mean time. They are in need of 700 MORE poll workers as of today, according the the news: q13.trb.com/news/kcpq-072908-kingcountypolls,0,5021109.story

Wow, this could really bankroll SAFE in a hurry! Good job, Jet!
Do you know whether the training is also during a workday? Since so many poll workers seem to be in their 70s and 80s, I'm guessing yes.
I'll check our calendar at work and see what's due 8/19. If there are no major deadlines, I'm willing to participate if I can also figure out a workday training (if necessary).

I have NEVER understood why elections take place on a Tuesday. It is like they are trying to give the unemployed and retired a greater share of the political power. It can really be challenging for a busy, working person to make it to the polls. They either need to get a secure system in place so that we can vote online or change it to Saturday.
*end of rant*

I've been voting absentee ballot for 15 years or more now. It is beyond me why anyone GOES to the polls.
Anyone can sign up for absentee ballot.

Oh, I know! I have been an absentee voter for as long as I've been in Washington. As it turns out, this election & the general one in November will be the final two polled elections. Starting next February, all voting will be done by mail from what I understand.

I can (more than likely) commit to doing November but I have a project that I can't run away from even for a day for the next couple of months...and I work for King County. Absolutely, count me in.

I can't do August 19. We have responses to three audits due that day, which means it's going to be bad on the 18th AND the 19th and working to get stuff out the door and to Olympia. Taking an hour off would be tough. It's too early for me to tell about November, as our calendars aren't very full but many deadlines will come up. I remember hearing from someone years ago that sometimes stores hire volunteers from organizations to take inventory. Has anyone heard about that? They pay the 501c3 instead of the people. I wonder if that has to be done during a workday, too. I'm thinking maybe not, since there would be customers then.

I thought that August 19th might be a bit soon to get a big group to be able to do this but I thought I'd see if there was any interest in doing so before taking any big steps.
Perhaps with more time, more folks can plan for it and we'd have a better show for November.
As it turns out, the day doesn't work really well for me either but I thought I'd put it out there...maybe November!
Also: Believe it or not, I have TONS of experience doing store inventories. My church did it as a service project for several different stores. But that was many years ago. It's my understanding that many chain stores use inventory companies to come in and do it now but there might still be stores who would prefer to use charity groups....it's worth looking into.

If you are still looking for volunteers, I am interested.
I'm new to the board, but very interested in helping out.

Hello Nico!! Welcome to the message board We ended up not having anyone do the last elections, mostly because we had very short notice. It is my understanding, however, that King County will still need folks to do the November Election & if you're interested. here's a link on how to sign up to be a Poll Worker: www.kingcounty.gov/elections/aboutus/employment/pollworker.aspxNovember's election will be the last In-Person Poll type election. Going forward elections will be done via the mail. This is still open to anyone else who would like to participate!
