Thank you Sara,
I already have them on alfalfa pellets and grain supplement and they are putting back on some weight. The last two loads of hay, while very expensive, have not done much more than fill their stomachs. Thank you very much for offering to help. Elaine

Sorry, really, really sorry to report that due to finances and rising costs, I'm going to have to have Amigo and Shiraca put down soon. Will let you know when he's gone

Well Elaine, I'm sorry to hear this is decision you've made about Mi Amigo and Shiraca, there have been a few of us on this board who offered to help out a few times in the past and you have not accepted the offers, but as a owner myself, I realize you as the owner can make the best decisions for your horses.

I assume that, in compliance with your adoption or foster contract, you have discussed this with Jaime Taft? I believe both of those contracts clearly state that you cannot put a SAFE horse down without SAFE permission, and that for the lifetime of the horse SAFE retains the right to take back the horse rather than allow it to be euthanized, if they so decide.

Or were these not actually SAFE horses, but rather a private rescue from this board? Thanks!

I don't know about anyone else, but this is very sad. It sounds like these horses may do alright under different circumstances? I'm not quite sure how this got to this point?? Sounds like help was offered by reading former posts.
If you as a horse owner are suffering financial burdens it seems putting your thoughts on the table and giving enough time for others to react and help, before euthanization may have been the responsible thing to do. Sad to see a horse put down simply due to rising feed costs. The economy is a burden to all horse people.
However, I will not judge because as Gingersmomtate says-only you know what is right for your horses.

Oh. I thought they were on the SAFE-assisted section where SAFE's procedures and contracts are followed. So the way SAFE is doing things today, these guys would have been on the "horses in need" column instead of the SAFE-assisted column?

Elaine, would you be open to waiting a few days to see if the SAFE community here can come up with a happier solution for these guys?

Yes, that is correct - they are SAFE assisted horses (adoption contracts) but they are privately owned by Elaine. But they are not "SAFE" rescued horses. SAFE has them listed to try to help Elaine find new homes for them.

OK - I get it now! Sometimes I'm a little slow.... It may be, Elaine, that since you have had to make this painful decision, it might light a fire under someone here and get an adoption happening. Can you give it a few more days to see? Thanks much!

We know this is a difficult and very sad subject for Elaine to broach, and for everyone in the SAFE community to accept. The sad reality is that SAFE is full up - and we cannot take on Amigo and Shiraca at this time. Redmond is right - these are *not* SAFE horses - they are horses whose owner cared enough about them to try another avenue to rehome them, rather than sending them to auction.
A little background: Elaine reached out to SAFE nearly two years ago for help with her horses, and under the circumstances at that time we tried to help. If you read the preceding pages to both horses’ threads, you will read how SAFE tried to help - by providing an emergency supply of hay/feed, farrier care, vet care, and even some training for Mi Amigo to help him find a home. However, we could only help so much - and when Mi Amigo was diagnosed with DSLD, sadly his chances of adoption diminished because he, like Shiraca, could only be a pasture pet.
We are sure most of you are well aware of the difficulty of finding homes for horses who are unsound and suitable as pasture pets.
These horses have been listed by SAFE for nearly two years with very little interest, unfortunately.
Amigo has very severe DSLD and is not only is he unrideable, if his lameness has progressed he may be barely pasture sound. Elaine has known for quite some time now that Amigo might not continue to be comfortable, and I suspect he may have reached that point.
Shiraca is also unrideable due to a hip injury, but she is also pretty wild and the last time we had our vet out to work on her, she was unable to be caught. From what Elaine has said, it sounds as if she may have some other type of ailment that is causing her to lose weight.
Since we have been unsuccessful at finding new homes for these two horses, we have in the past counseled Elaine to consider euthanasia as an option for them. Primarily because they are such difficult placements, euthanasia might be the kindest choice. Certainly it would prevent anything worse from happening to either of them in the future.
Under the circumstances, Elaine is doing *exactly* what a responsible horse owner should do. She is making the difficult decision to euthanize two horses whose quality of life is deteriorating. SAFE supports her decision, and we hope that you will respect Elaine and how difficult this is for her.
Elaine loves these horses and has done her best to care for them, even though it has been very difficult for her. If she has reached the decision that it is time to let them go, I am certain that this has been a painful and anguished process for her. If there is someone out there who would be willing to take them under these circumstances, please do not hesitate to come forward! But please do understand that this is not a decision that has been reached lightly.
Elaine, my heart goes out to you. I hope you are comforted by the fact that there are many people here who feel the same way.

Elaine, is doing what she thinks is best, she doesnt need all this negative BS . This is a hard enuf task w/o any criticism

I have been searching for something appropriate to say to this all day but you've really captured what I'm feeling right now.
