I had the pleasure of meeting Ginger and touring her lovely facility. There is not a shadow of doubt in my mind that she is capable of near miracles with bringing horses back. We need to get her to post pictures of the 40 year old TB mare she has that still trots and canters like a teenager!

I'm so glad to hear they're doing alright! Pie had me worried there for a bit! They both sound like such dolls I've been daydreaming about them in their "after" state, trotting around all fat and glossy ;D I've sponsored both of them, but I wish there was more I could do!

I've spoken to Ginger on the phone a few times and both horses continue to do well. She says that Pie is already showing a bit of weight gain, and she says he's a horse that has a lot to say. Isabelle is doing well also but she has suffered a great emotional blow by being so badly neglected, and she is still affected by that. It's going to take longer for her to regain her spirits.
Ginger has promised an update with photos, so hopefully we'll have that for you soon!

A Foster Adventure for two, Highlands Spa, Jan 23/ 08
Well, hello to all from the frosty spa. We are a bit behind in our reports because feeding schedules, pedicures, and “hair” appointments take up a lot more time in this frigid weather. But, as you see from the pics, the horses are pretty happy eating & sunning themselves. The last pic is the grey mare, who is happily re-homed with one of our assistants. She is named Emma now, seen meeting one of her companions at the “spa”. Pie in the pasture: Isabelle in the pasture: Emma and a new friend: Pie and Isabella have really settled in and are loving all the feed and attention, and for the first time since arriving, Isabella is actually speaking up and nickering for her food, and actively seeking peoples’ attention. This is a HUGE thing for her, as she has been very withdrawn and stoic since her arrival, and very sad. We were quite worried about her. We think the turnaround occurred when we had a young girl came to visit the farm last Sunday. Isabella was VERY interested when she heard a childs' voice and cautiously came over to investigate. The little girl went over to her, and rubbed her face & talked to her, then hooked up the lead rope, and soon, the two of them went out and about for a little exploring. (in case anyone is worried about MY sanity in allowing this, be assured, this little girl is a fairly competent horse person, and, she was also under close supervision). Well, Isabella followed her everywhere, walking in tiny steps, very carefully, and stopping when asked, and never took her eyes off the girl. After watching the interaction between them for some time, we strongly believe that she once belonged to a young girl & there was much love between them......and Isabella remembers it. ( In a more perfect world, we could find that girl & reunite them.) Her spirits have risen since that time and she is interacting with everyone, loves to be groomed, and we believe that she will now begin to improve as Pie has....by great leaps and bounds! Isabelle and Friend engage in a little "girl talk" As for Mr. Sweetie Pie...well, he believes he has three main jobs in life....eating, sunbathing, and being an entertainer. Although he needs a companion and some supervision outside, his semi-blindness does not stop his sense of humor from bubbling over the minute he thinks there is an audience! He rattles the chain on the pasture gate with his teeth when he has run out of hay, unhooks the feed bucket in his stall and rolls it around to let us know it needs refilling...what a guy! He truly IS a happy-go-lucky kind of guy, and very sociable and chats away with everyone... He just loves attention. He has managed to pick up enough padding in those HUGE hip bones to need a little larger blanket...who would have thought that could happen??! Pie, eating....and eating....and eating... Seriously, these guys were so close to death, we knew we needed to be prepared for the reality that neither horse might be able to live thru the first week, or maybe not even the first night. And yet, their courage keep them from giving up. We cannot begin to tell you of the thousand little breakthroughs that have happened so far. Should we later find that Isabella is trained & sound enough for riding, she will make some little girls’ dreams come true, and fill their heart with joy. This mare is a precious little jewel. And Pie just needs his own stage for performing, a safe stall at night, and a companion, and he will entertain & amaze you every day! Well, time to get back to the mixology of the grain!, ‘till next report, that’s it from the Spa....G. P.S. With the sheer numbers of other horses desperately needing rescue/foster homes right now, we have offered to extend Pie and Isabella's reservations at the spa. We hope you will agree that both horses will benefit from a stability in their situation for a while longer, as they become stronger. We are more than willing to continue providing hay, stabling, & care, and wish to thank, wholeheartedly, all you wonderful people involved with SAFE, who continue to support our efforts with donations toward bedding, grain/pellets, and vet care. We all know we can’t save everyone, but together, we CAN save these two, and that is a wonderful thing.

Pie has the cutest ears EVER. I love hearing about him and his silly personality! Glad to hear Isabella is feeling better and her personality is sparkling through, too. I always knew they'd make it. It's like Heidi. I saw Heidi the 2nd day after she was rescued and there was just something about her where you knew she hadn't quite given up yet...and look at her now!

If that isn't the truth... we can't save every one... but the lives of these two have entirely different directions now. I love hearing their stories. Even after being let down for so long, they both still have their personalities... I cry at everything, it's just sort of what I do, but these guys make me so happy! And what a relief they can stay there together.

This is the best news I heard in a long time. I'm so happy that Isabelle met the little girl and has turned around. Thank God she has the wonderful foster family taking care of her and Pie.

This update has made my night, maybe my week! That is such glorious news for Isabelle. I really hope the little girl can come back once in a while. And thank you for offering the Spa for Pie and Isabelle for a while longer. Bless you.

They look great!! Isabella is so sweet with that little girl, so curious. I love Pie's ears too, they look just like an elderly horse I used to know named Mac. He had the same expression and the most wonderful personality - Pie sounds a lot like him.
