For a dainty looking girl she sure is tough! I hope things level out for her (and you!) soon.

Dr. Hannah just left a little bit ago. Bella was on 3 legs when I got home tonight, so I gave her a call, and she was nearby, so she came right over. Bella's abcess unfortunately is in her heel bulb, and not an easy one. For being in so much pain she was a really good girl for the first round of paring and poking, up to and including when Hannah had to make an incision in her heel bulb. Then she decided she had had enough, and no amount of Berry Good treats were going to distract her (she doesn't like my peppermint horse treats, so I went out and bought her her very own Berry Good treats after I discovered she likes them). After that it was a battle - Hannah tried first to block the foot, but because of all the inflammation the block didn't take, so then she tried squirting lidacaine into the incision, but that wasn't cutting it either, and by this time Bella just didn't want us touching her period. After much struggling we were able to block her foot up at the fetlock, and finally got her feeling no pain. However, she was still convinced we were going to kill her, and even though she was walking normally she was not letting us touch it. We took her out of the stall onto the grass and she took out her frustration on the grass by frantically snatching at it, and while she was distracted with that Hannah was able to get it flushed out.
So now we are on SMZs twice daily, with twice daily soaking in epsom salts and standing in a boot with an epsom salt poultice locked in a stall for probably the next week and a half.
Poor girl! (and poor me...)

Yes, poor the both of you! If she gets the runs from the SMZ's and you need some probiotics, I have some for you.

oy vey! So sorry about this - I've been lucky in that His Highness's abscesses are always at his toe.
Does she seem relieved today?

Yes, she is still very swollen but walking much more comfortably. Poor girl, hate to have to lock her in on such a beautiful day!

If you don't already have one, I highly recommend a soaking boot. There is nothing worse than having to stand there and try to keep a Thoroughbred's little hoofie in a pail twice a day. The second you turn your head or try to straighten your aching back for a second, wham, there goes the pail and everything in it...every time! These are great. www.thehorseshoof.com/davisboots.html

I have one Cat. I have 3 thoroughbreds of my own, after all. Yep, she is soaking in that twice a day and then when she's not soaking she is wearing the boot dry with the epsom salt poultice over her heel and frog area. The soaking boots are great just for keeping them clean and protecting the foot even when they are not soaking.

Whoever gets this horse is one lucky person. I have been spending time grooming her the past week and she is just a lover! Even with her bum leg I took her blanket off and curried her, brushed her and sang to her and she just stood there like a statue; licking, chewing and blowing. She is a total doll, curious and so so sweet. She will be just gorgeous under saddle!

Yes, I think all of Allison's one on one attention with Bella had really brought her out of her shell. She was a bit reserved when she first arrived at my farm, but she has really opened up and become quite a lover, and she learned pretty quickly that Berry Goods treats come from pockets!

Yes, she does love those Berry treats! But she is polite about asking for them. She will snuffle the pocket and stare with those big brown eyes and melt you into giving her treat after treat just for being such a cutie!

You are more than welcome, and Bella and JR deserve all the kindness we can afford... 3 yrs ago I had no clue wat an abcess was ( Calif gal that I am )and then along came Buckwheat and MUD and more MUD. She ( 21 at the time ) had 3 w/n the 1st 4 mos of my owning her.... The next yr I think she only had one or two, and Slyder had one..Knock on wood, Buck hasnt had any this year or last ..Neither have Ish or Lark......... As far as Buck is concerned, I think its due to better food managementand for Ish and Lark , its probably just that they now get food... ;D ;D P.S. In ref to the Berry apple treats.... these guys all refer to them as BERRRRRRRRRRRRRY BERRY GOOD ( Geeze, who wound me up again... : So, with all that sayd, its our pleasure to pass along some good foot care to those that are in need..... we should probably pass along two massages for Jaime and Chelsea for having to do all the necssary bending over

Yes, as a California girl, you never see abcesses but you worry all the time about sand colic!
I grew up in the Midwest, so I am used to dealing with abcesses. I had to learn about putting all the horses on psyllium when I moved to Cali!

Oh, I have new photos of Bella from today, you just reminded me! Give me a few and I'll post them. She's doing great, moving sound, although she had a wound on the same leg as the abcess, it seemed minor, but Hannah had to probe it to make sure, and now I think most of the swelling still in her leg is from that. I think the abcess is clearing up.
