Sorry I have not been good about updates! I am working on pics I am going to borrow a friends camera (maybe tomorrow?) Heidi is doing GREAT! She is such a good little girl! I was playing with her today in the big arena, I was working on getting her to position herSELF against the mounting block, and I got on her bareback in the halter She was actually pretty comfy now that she has some muscle We walked and trotted around, stopped soft, backed soft, did some leg yeilds and hind end pivots, she didn't even spook when someone who had hauled in suddendly came galloping past the arena (Scared ME!) She is a really sweet horse, She is still green but with more training she will make some little girl the 'perfect' horse!

AWESOME! She looks great Monica (your rider seems to be missing her hard hat though...) One thing, we updated our website to reflect her anhydrosis (sweating disorder) and you should probably include that on yours as well. I don't think it will limit her too much in our climate, based on what I have read, and there are treatments that after running a test to determine if her sweat glands are functioning, so it may be quite manageable, but we do want to disclose it. Here is a link: www.cvm.uiuc.edu/petcolumns/showarticle.cfm?id=111

How did you discover her sweating disorder? I never heard of anything like this. I learn something new all the time.

I know there are neutraceuticals for the anhydrosis......would they work for her? I would be happy to pay for a couple of months worth(they are cheap) and to ship them to Monica.......

Chelsea, I don't know much more than what I read at that link above. It states there that the vet can give them a shot that causes the body to sweat, which is done to determine if the sweat glands are functional. If they are, then there are medications that can help. If they are not, then I guess she is stuck with it.
Chelsea first noticed that she would only sweat in two places, on her shoulder, and on her flank. This has continued with Monica. It doesn't seem to bother her much, and its really more of a problem in a warmer climate than ours, but we do have to watch that she does not overheat.

Oh I forgot to mention that she has started sweating under her girth during work, I talked to my vet and he said her sweat patterns may be an allergic response and she is responding to her new diet. He said he has seen similar things in other horses who benefited from a low sugar/no grain diet. And I feed as little grain as possible. So this would make sense: "Something is interfering with the physiological, chemical, or neural transmission. We're not sure what, but there are a lot of theories," says Dr. Scoggins. "One is that it is a metabolic failure..." maybe an insulin response? Right now she is eating two flakes of grass/timothy mix at night and 1 flake in the morning and 1/2 coffee can of grass pellets, 4 cups of Moorglo, 1/2 cup of flaxseed, and 2oz of Dynamite Plus split into two feedings. She also grazes all day. He didn't get to examine her, but since she has started sweating a little I am crossing my fingers it will resolve itself!

Hmm..that is encouraging! I will have to talk to my vet as well. We do know she was severely malnourished, so much so that it appears to have stunted her growth as she was in with her mother (and a sister?) and they were normal-sized arabs. Perhaps you are right about that!

I took care of a polo pony who became anhydrotic after a bad colic. I still don't really understand how that worked, but apparently it can happen. They sold her up to Canada - she couldn't hack life in L.A. anymore.
