Little Miss Heidi has somehow managed to get a puncture wound to her right shoulder. Allison noticed it last night and this morning she was limping and there is a hole with pus coming out that is swollen and warm. I caught her and put her in a stall and Dr. Hannah is coming out today (unfortunately I am in the midst of a huge project at work and can't be there). Anyway, she'll get it cleaned out today and she might need antibiotics, we'll see.
I am sure Vanna did it - either kicked her or more likely ran her into a tree branch or something. I keep putting Heidi in with Lexi but she's so tiny she runs under my hot tape fences (which are, once again, not working) to get back in with Slam and Vanna. *sigh*

Dr. Hannah just left and called me with an update. The wound is about 3/4" deep but angled upwards so it will drain well on its own and doesn't need a drain. It will require cleaning 2x a day (Heidi - listen up - you better be easy to catch in the morning for this or you are going to have to live in a stall for the next 7-10 days). She's also getting put on antibiotics.
Questions for Chelsea: 1) When did Heidi have her Tetanus? I assume sometime this spring but wanted to double check. 2) Do you still have the bottle of antibiotics that I *think* went with JR? At some point I bought a big bottle of them but don't know if I still have them, let me know if you do or know what happened to them.

Heidi's owie looked like it was healing nicely when I saw her on Saturday. She and Lexi were getting along nicely, Lexi will run the fence line and call for her if Heidi is taken out of the paddock. I worked a bit with Heidi on Saturday and she was a little nervous about the commotion Lexi was causing, but settled down once Lexi was soothed.

Is she joined at the hip to Heidi now?

Chelsea - I found the big bottle I had, so no worries. Yes, Lexi is totally bonded to Heidi despite being very mean to her at feeding time. And, putting them together was really the only option as both of them were getting beat up by my mares.

They are best buds, except at feeding time I get the feeling that Lexi doesn't like to be alone, once she was with Slam and Vanna she was quite happy, and Slam had a new woman in his Harem of mares so he was curious and pleased. Vanna didn't seem to care much, she was mooning over Tessa in the next paddock. Such delightful animals they are!

This lil' mare is soooo pretty. It's certainly is amazing how great Arabs (and any other horse for that matter) look with the right food and care. If I had the place I'd snatch this girl up in a heart beat. Of course I am partial to the Arabs. She'd be just the right size for my daughter who is very petite.

That's what Heidi needs, a kid who loves to ride. The more you ride her, the better she is. She needs a kid who likes to ride every day after school to turn her into a superstar!

That's exactly how my 1/2 Arab is. The more you ride the better he is. I think it takes a special person to understand that Arab quality and that they think differently than any other breed. Always looking to for something to keep their mind working. Man I wish I could adopt her.

Boy, we haven't been keeping Heidi's thread up to date! Well, a couple of weeks ago Heidi went to a friend of Cat's that runs a children's hunter/jumper lesson program, with the idea that she could use Heidi for lessons and help get her some exposure to get her a home. Unfortunately, as Heidi had not been worked with in several weeks due to my work schedule and had gotten completely bonded to Lexi, she was not very well behaved when they tried to work with her and she decided that Heidi would not work out there. We had to scramble to find another place for Heidi to go and meanwhile ended up having to pay board there, and Cat worked with her a few times as well (and she did get better each time, but had definately reverted a bit in her training). Fortunately, Monica (who trained Heidi) had a student that was going to be looking for a horse for her birthday in a month or two. They offered to foster Heidi and essentially take her on a trial to work with her with Monica and see if it is a good match for her. Heidi is now back at Eden Farms and Monica will work with her and the little girl and see if it is a good match. I had the chance to meet them when Chelsea and I stopped by to check in on Heidi on Saturday, and they seem like very nice people who, with proper training and lessons, may make a great family for Heidi. For now, Heidi can be considered Pending. Yay for Heidi! ;D

What great news. Fingers crossed that it will be a good match and that they will become super stars!

I hope it works out! Heidi would love a kid who would ride her every day. That is exactly the kind of home she needs.
