Oh Gosh - I am so excited. I just hopped on quickly to say I couldn't head down to help at Clayton's tommorrow because my daughter was sick and saw it was finalized! YIPEE!
For those of you who don't know, Azalea has been the desktop on my computer at work since she came to the CBER lot. I had committed to taking another beautiful girl at that time (you can see Prada in the other rescue page here) so I didn't have room. Prada is now healthy and is going to be a 16th birthday present for one of my best friend's daughter...so I suddenly had the opportunity to bring my sweet Azalea home!
I am really looking forward to bringing her back to health, she is such a dear. I can't thank CE enough for taking her and helping out with her in the short term. I'll work out the transportation and get her home here to Duvall soon!

Hi Kristine,
Thanks so much for your response to my inquiry about Azalea. She's already found a good home, but I'm hoping to do a rescue tomorrow at an auction. Hope you're having a good weekend!

Well, Saturday was the big day. Miss Azalea was a busy girl and she stayed sweet and calm through everything. CE who has been kind enough to foster Azalea for me had a clinic, so first Azalea got loaded up and hauled from her current home to her last home at Cassie's by CE. Then Jaybird and I made the treck to waaaay down southwestern washington (I didn't realize we were going to the ocean...it was so pretty down there) and picked up Azalea for another trip, this time 4 hours (driving plus really long wait for food and gas hunt) to another new place. Azalea took it all in stride! CE did a great job taking care of her and she is looking a lot better, but the healing process is going to be long.
Azalea is staying at a friends house for a bit for me until Prada (see her in non SAFE horses) become's a teenage girl's dream for her birthday. Then Azalea will be moving into her forever digs. CE told us what a lady and how quiet Azalea was and she was true to form, except, apparently this lady showed threw quite a ruckus when the other horses were lead past her into the barn before she was. She was feeling quite spunky, running around and hollering at her new friends. She loves her new lady friend next door, but her lady friend is a bit jealous of all the attention she gets from the boys. She laps up her alfalfa and sloooowly nibbles through everything else. I spent Sunday working on her scabs and grooming her and she was wonderful. She did keep playing with her leadrope and I bet she would end up being an escape artist if left tied for long.
I took some photos and will post them soon. Thanks to everyone for helping me get her.

Azalea is doing wonderfully. She immediately fell in love with all the other horses at her temporary home. She does love to be groomed, but only if it is in sight of her new friends! She is so spoiled at my friends house...Azalea is a very picky eater, she has switched herself to only alfalfa by not eating anything else. On top of that, she doesn't like all the alfalfa, just the little leaves and tender stalks. She picks through getting the gourmet goodies and then turns her nose up from the rest. Her leftovers get picked up and distrubuted to the other horses in the pastures and she gets a brand new flake for herself. She looks so smug as she starts in on the best stuff again while everyone else eats her leftovers.
On Sunday, we rode Prada, Quest and Skittles over for a visit. The girls were in the arena, an advanced pony cluber took Prada out (and offered to buy her on the spot!), and all of Azaleas friends were out being ridden too. She was so lonely in the pastures all alone. I went in and hung out with her for a while and she was so sweet. We played follow the leader and she wouldn't leave my pocket. She wanted to know why everyone else was out to play and she didn't get to go! I had my hands full with my girls and Prada too, so Azalea had to survive with just some pasture play and grooming, poor sweetie.

I'm with Azalea on the picky eater thing! I used to spend waaaaay to much time at the dinner table when I was a kid, because the concept of cleaning my plate sound kooky to me...I mean, if I don't want to eat it, then why do I have to eat it anyway?! That didn't go over well when I was a kid and I always ended up being the last one excused. Geez...I was born stubborn I think. Peri, I am so glad you got to spend some quality time with her yesterday and I think it's so sweet that she's a pocket horsey. The both of you are so lucky!!

Well, Azalea was ridden on Saturday - no not by chicken me - I put a daring 14yr old up to it. Her weight is fabulous and her manners not quite so much. We have realized what she does to evade pressure - rear! Anna - my 14 yr old daredevil with skill - did some ground work with her and then said, can I get on her back. I thought sure - Azalea was coming around - so slowly, bareback with only a halter, Anna got on her. Azalea was sure thinking the whole time, I walked with her, we got a bit of forward motion, a give to the side and a back and called it good. We left her chewing her lips pretty pleased with herself for all the lavish attention she got! It is actually kind of sad to work with her - I don't think she was ever seen as anything other than a commoditiy. She first expects to be punished and is very head shy. When she gets rubs and pets instead of pain she has to think and process it before she can accept it. On friday, I was standing in her stall petting her talking to my friend for about 15 minutes. Suddenly, I realized it was the first time she stayed with me! ;D Before she would put up with attention for just a few minutes before go out to her run-in, this time she just stayed with me! Small moments are momentus for us!

Yesterday was fabulous with my miss Azalea. I only had time to stop by and drop off her grain - I wished I ate that gourment! I was in my open toed work sandals (oops, not following correct barn safety guidelines) but I just had to got out and see her. It was the first time she came up to greet me on her own! We had progressed to her standing and watching me approach without leaving, that was a huge step, but she hadn't approached me before. This time not only did she approach, she followed me everywhere and stood looking forlonely at the gate when I left. Of course, I do know her favorite itchy spots now! ;D
I did find a rather large lump right at her throatlatch on the right side. It is moveable and rather firm. I wonder if she may have a thyroid problem - is that close to where Basset had her lump? If it is, maybe getting that straightened out will help with her keeping weight on easier.
I have new photos so I will try to get them up in a couple of days.
