I am working with a horse that was abandoned at an acquaintance's stable for boarding non-payment. She has really water, gooey, irritable eyes. The vet came out and thinks that she is allergic to the dust in grass hay. So her suggestion was that the stable owner either switch to Alfalfa or soak her grass hay in water before feeding it to her. So far, it seems like his workers aren't taking the initiative to make these changes. Are there any eye drops or allergy medicines that might also do the trick? I'd be willing to pay for the stuff..... I just can't be down there every day, twice a day, to make sure the workers are feeding her correctly.

Maybe she can wear a fly mask to keep the dust down. You can use saline drops in her eyes, too.

I had a quarter horse like that and we just used saline drops.

The other thing to check is that she may have clogged nasal lacrimal ducts.......there is a tiny hole in their nostril that is a drain for tears. If that is plugged(dust is a major culprit) then everything backs up and come out their eyes instead. A vet can come out and place a tomcat catheter in that hole in the nostril and backflush the ducts with saline to force out the blockage. We did a fair amount of these and it sure sounds like the symptoms we saw from blocked ducts.
