Mr. Tanner seems to have contracted warts all over his cute little nose. I know that they kind of run their course and go away eventually, but if anyone has a good way to speed up the process will you let me know. Also, does anyone know how contagious they are. I would freak if my sales filly came down with them this close to the sale.

We have had eight colts together for over a year. When one got warts, no one else did. I wouldn't worry too terribly much about them being contagious. Another forum recently had a discussion about warts. Suggestions made include crushing them, or rubbing them with castor oil or penicillin. And how is he doing otherwise, by the way?

Sorry to hear about that! I guess that puts a stop to any muzzle-kissing. Don't know if this is Old Wives' Tale or not, but I've heard rubbing some Crest toothpaste (original) in to warts will shrink them...something about the silica in it??

Crushing them does work, apparently. If you get a few of the big ones, the rest will fade away, too. You can use standard pliers from your toolbox.
This is a recommendation from "The Horse Doctor Is In" by Brent Kelley...I have always loved his Thoroughbred Times column, and the book contains the same great advice, peppered with his trademark dry, self depracating humor. I recommend it 100%.

Thanks all for the advice. Do you know that crushing a wart on a mouthy 2-year-old is a lot harder than it sounds. LOL. We got it done, but Tanner was VERY helpful. It didn't help that I got peppermint oil all over my hands prior to trying to do it.

Bringing this topic up again... anyone ever had any experience with warts on ears? I just noticed today that miss Kia has like six or seven of them on her ears... all clustered together. Suggestions, anyone???

Are you sure they are warts? They could be sarcoids, sarcoids looks like warts and are often found around ears.

One of my friends mares has them on her ears (and they are really bad), they typically generate from biting flies (from what I've been told) and it is best to just leave them be, as they can get worse if you remove them from the ear. Every situation might be different though...

I don't know about warts on ears, but one of my yearling fillies has them around one eye. She doesn't have any on her nose, just the eyelid and underneath her eye. I'm just waiting for them to run their course.

Okay... should offer a bit more detail. They are not aural plaques as they are only on the outer side of the ear. They are smooth and black, or really more like dark-- like her skin colour. She has five on one ear and two on the other, and they are all basically about the size of a pencil eraser-- give or take a bit.
