So my gelding received a nice kick (I'm sure he deserved it ) and has a nasty wound. Vet has prescribed SMZs (not to mention Bute, antibiotic ointment used to treat mastitis, and a few other things) - I've never had to give them before, and I know he won't simply scarf them down with his feed. Got any tips? I was thinking applesauce...

When Rhoen was gelded, he would just push the pills out of his food. So, I had to get creative. I used warm water and disolved them into a paste, added some mollases to it and then poured the mix into his grain and mixed it up really well, then fed it to him. He ate it every time. You can also just disolve them all the way with warm water and use a syringe to feed it to them like you do wormer. I couldn't do it that way with Rhoen though. Good luck!

I actually crush the tablets into a powder and just put them in grain............

I do the same thing as Rachelle, a little warm water, and a drop of molasses in the grain. They get so excited about the molasses they dont even realize the meds are in there.

How is he taking it CC? With Prada, when she was getting lots of meds - I ended up using a syringe because she wouldn't eat it no matter how creative of a concoction I put together.

Yup. SMZ's don't have much taste to them. Most horses will eat them fine dissolved in water and mixed with their grain, especially if it's a sweet feed with molasses in it.
Bute, now that I've seen horses pick around every bit of!

Amazingly enough he seems to be eating his feed with the SMZs crushed up! He picked at it a bit at first, but I think his greediness won out.
Administering the bute paste was the real fun - it was almost like a carnival game. Fortunately, as of yesterday, no more bute needed.
Dr. Crabbe checked it again yesterday and gave me some kind of wound-sealing aluminum-type spray and now, thank goodness, no more 2x/day commute in traffic to clean his wound!

I keep a can of this stuff in my horse first-aid kit and I love it. No bandaging necessary with this stuff ;D
